Hello everyone,
Over the past few years I've been saving for a new camera and some lenses, and as of right now, I plan on purchasing the Scarlet S35 whenever it comes out. I have some Canon lenses at home (most of which are 100mm+), and I'm looking to spend under $2000 on an additional prime lens, ideally 50mm or less.

With the MX sensor in mind and regardless of mount, do you folks have any recommendations?

What do you shoot? Are you talking cine glass or stills glass?

I shoot stills and motion, with a focus on motion. Cine or still glass, whatever gets me the most for my money.

Take a look at the Zeiss ZE primes. They offer great value for money.

Thank you for your input Liam, I appreciate it. I'll check out the Zeiss.

Have you used any Canon L lenses, like the 35 and 50mm?

I may shoot for one of those, but it depends on whether their performance justifies the much higher cost.

Yes, the 35mm f/1.4 is a superb lens, on a camera with a full frame sensor it is my favorite prime - on an S35 sized sensor I'm not sure it's worth the extra spend. The 50mm f/1.2 is another great lens, but Canon have made some duds, so make sure you test one before you buy it. To be honest, the 50mm f/1.4 is just as good at every aperture above f/2 though the f/1.2 is built like a tank. The 24 f/1.4 is also a fantastic lens. The EF 28mm is a good budget wide also worth considering.

Don't forget, these are stills lenses and whilst optically very sweet they are not the best choice for motion work, ie they breathe, manual focus is not as easy as on a cine lens, they don't have an aperture ring etc. Scarlet will have an EOS mount available which will make life easier, but at your price point I'd still consider the Zeiss primes before the Canon's.

If you're plan on using an "intelligent" mount, with digital wireless focus control, I'd get Canon L. The 35mm is excellent.

If you're gonna use a "dumb" mount, the Zeiss lenses, with their superior mechanics, will be much better for focusing. Buy them from Duclos with the cine mod. The 28mm and 35mm are standouts.

Thank you Nils. I plan on purchasing the Electronic Canon Mount, so it seems Canon L glass is slightly favored.

I'm also considering holding off for an extra few months to buy a couple used PL primes. Would you consider the wait worth it, or should higher-end stills glass suffice?

Hmm, maybe I saw a bad one, but I was playing with a 35L f/1.4 today, and wasn't too impressed WFO. Corners were noticeably softer than the centre, even on APS-C. That said, it was closer to being as nice mechanically as an old-school manual-focus lens than most autofocus lenses.

Ty guys for the input. Looks like I will have my hands full with some research and testing.

P.S.
I like how the second Contax listed is made in West Germany.
