  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Cards

there have been extensive user tests with 3rd party cards already. Only the 8 gb cards work 100%, because RED 8 gb cards are simply rehoused lexar 8 gb cards. 16 gb cards you will get unpredictable results, especially anything beyond rec 28. They just aren't fast enough compared to the RED ones, and I believe the new 600x cards don't work at all, please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Why would you pay $150 for those 8GB cards when you can buy the 16GB RED cards for $300? I know that's kinda pricey, but they're the best option right now for CF. Nothing else at 16GB or larger works now and we're still a few months away from RED shipping their new 64GB cards.

anyone know where there are some lexar 8gb 300's? my cards are worn out...

If you do want to go the cheap route with 8GB cards, there's a ton of them for sale at Amazon.com I believe NewEgg has them too.

the 16 gb cards will give you more flexibility. and saves you on offloading ever 4 minutes. it can get kind of tedious. Your gonna end up getting 4-8, 8 gb cards. and in the end they will be incredibly obsolete. You really are better off getting 2-3 16 gb cards for now, and hold out maybe for the 64's coming out. You can record at a higher bitrate, higher resolutions, and framerates. You have everything to gain and little money to lose out on.

I'd still go the 8 gig route. You get a lot more gigs for your $. For the price of one 16gig Red card you can get 6 8gig cards and have three times as much storage. Also you know for a fact that CF cards have a very limited shelf life so whether its 8gig or 16 gig they're pretty much obsolete by the end of one feature anyway. also getting more cards for your money means that each individual card get less abuse with being constantly written and reformatted. For the price of 4 16gigers you could have 24 8 gig cards and wouldn't even have to worry about offloading until the end of the day. no offload means one more extra person who can actually help on the production instead of just managing data. Im just giving you the bright side cause I know you're going that way anyway.

However, those gigs can't record 4K 16:9, and if they aren't Lexar/RED cards, they can't go over 2K at all.

Hogwash. 4 features and counting on 12 of our cards.

So who is offloading then? Some chump who's working overtime, or some guy at the post lab (who you have to pay anyway)?

The 16GB are definitely the best choice as you can record 4K 16:9 and 4.5K to them as well as higher frame rates for 2K and 3K.

It's true that FLASH media wears out over time, all reusable media does, but FLASH is about as robust as it gets and you will have to record to each card a few thousand times to wear it down.

I love me the red 16GB I would get at least 6 because its always good to have more than you need.

Can't do 4K in 16/9? Since when? We've shot loads of stuff on the Lexar/Red and shot in both 2:1 and 16:9. Also, yes, we have worn two of our six cards out to the point where they're no longer reliable.

Just buy Red media .

I know it isn't "proprietary" but maybe it should be. At least then we won't have a new post pop up every time someone thinks they found some new "fast" cards.

Even if a new card comes out that is 1,000,000x it isn't going to work until it gets approved by Red. I'm sure they will let us all know....
