  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Wanted: Your Unused Stage 2 Upgrade Option

Hi dan, just calculating around here, someone taking a stage 2 epic and then selling it new in the box will make at least a profit of 10k-12k usd...people without REDs have to pay for the same brain and modules around 32 000 usd....and have to wait a long long time.

so this imaginery person will gladly pay 32 000 to get the epic much sooner i.e. without paying a premium.

so my q:
why should someone do your deal?
it doesnt fit the math inmho.

(its not highjacking what i am doing, this is a forum to discuss, so i discuss this offer, maybe Dan can rethink or retune his offer, maybe he even finds a better model)

EDIT:
this model can make sense for people absolutly not having the funds to go stage 2

Well, not everyone is doing it that way - and I'm not sitting around with $32,000-40,000 to give someone for a product that is not yet out.

This might be beneficial to someone who:

1. Owns a Red.
2. Is not getting the rentals or work from their red that they were expecting to get.
3. Isn't planning on getting a stage 2 or stage 3 upgrade.
4. Would like to get a fair long term Return on Investment with LITERALLY ZERO out of pocket expense.

I appreciate you playing the devil's advocate here, and I could sit here making promises of $30,000-$40,000 but that's not what I'm about.

I'm realistic. This is a realistic and fair offer for something that has not yet hit the marketplace. Basically I'm the one taking the risk by paying up front for something not yet out. If there are people around throwing $10,000, or more dollars at a red owner who isn't doing stage two or three upgrades in order to get an early epic X then that is their perogative. I haven't seen it - all I've seen is people TALKING about that. People I don't necessarily trust or value their opinion.

Anyone who knows me knows that I'm a hard worker and someone who hustles to get things happening. Not everyone works as hard as I do or is as savvy. If you aren't planning on doing a stage 2 or stage 3 upgrade then this would be a wise decision on your part. This is real, and a lot of what I'm hearing is just big talk and blowing smoke.

I'm a big proponent of the Red System. What makes my opinion valuable is that I started as a skeptic and through scientific testing and observation have come to believe it is a very viable and well-done system. I'm not a fanboy or a starry-eyed dreamer thinking that I can finally make my big movie because of a cheaper camera. Producers and DPs have listened to me when I told them it would greatly benefit their production to use a Red One MX instead of a regular Red.

I'm not a rental house - I'm an owner operator - but I can get the camera out on many working jobs within that one year. So, I believe this offer could be of benefit to someone out there.

Finally - yes I thought about what you said regarding the difference between retail and discounted Epic Package. So in the event of some major rental failure on my part, I will guarantee to pay the Original Red Owner a buyout of the $10,000 difference between Epic X upgrade cost and Retail Epic X should profit share not reach that $10,000 mark.

Best Wishes,
Dan Kanes

Well....it never hurts to put it out there...

But it just does not add up for a red owner to cash in his $8500 credit and all the extras for 10% of possible rentals. And even then how does one do accounting of said rentals? I would imagine that most of us can offer our stage 2's at a big premium at this moment and would allow a non red owner to get an epic quickly but at a price. I'm not one, but after reading this thread....i realized that RED was giving me $8500 cash and then a bunch of extras for being onboard early....I haven't added all of it up to see what the total is, but it's enough and having an epic early out of the gate is sure another thing.

Good luck

Thank you for asking this.

I would keep meticulous rental records. For me to stiff someone on 10% would be just ridiculous (regardless I'm sure people have done something this low before). The 10% payout would occur within 30 days of each rental payment - so in other words a steady stream of low (to medium)volume cash.

The few EPIC-X Stage 2's that only a select few will be willing to part with after the 3-4 year wait in line will likely fetch a significant premium. Not day-to-day of course but when someone has a problem, a rental house needs 3 more to get that big rental and etc. the premiums could be significant. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if an EPIC Stage 2 sells for $35,000 (a $15.5k premium) sometime in the next 12 to 18 months.

However, there are some people out there that just don't have the $19,500 to start with and don't plan on upgrading at future stages either. For those people, $1,000 is better than nothing especially with the possibility of making more. The EPIC should be in both names however with an independent auditor on rental income and if it sold for any reason at premium, the profits should be split.
