5K Scarlet is better than 4K Red One for those whom count pixels. Scarlet will always be MX, some RED One's will be MX but the majority will probably be M

Some thoughts...

From what I understand, a vast majority of RED One owners are getting upgraded.

I'd also guess that eventually, after Epic demand is satisfied, new Ones will be MX as well. (But that is complete speculation on my part.)

The 2/3" Scarlets will be 3K. Is the S35 going to be 5K?

Yes.

This is why people can't be calling Scarlet a "prosumer" camera.

It still cracks me up that people still call it a consumer camera when the same people (I'm not saying you, Terry, by any means) call it a consumer camera when they don't realize there are 4, possibly 3 different cameras that have the Scarlet branding...some of which shoot higher resolutions than the 4K RED One.

Just sayin'...

If you don't need a tiny form factor, I'd pick a used RED ONE mainly because the market for used RED ONE accessories will make it more cost effective overall and because of the wide array of lens options. If you are shooting in a studio or on a traditional set with big sticks and heads, you'll probably wish you had the versatility and wide availability access of RED ONE accessories and lenses over the fixed Scarlet. Remember that quality accessories for the Scarlet (at first) will be more expensive than their used RED counterparts and may be in limited availability and back-order.

However, you have the tradeoff of not being able to take advantage of the fullness of modularity, as well as other goodies such as using the REDmote Pro with your electronic lenses. ;)

Good point. But I think for the first year there will be delays and back-order on the modules and goodies. Also, with the fixed scarlet, there isn't a concept of plural "electronic lenses" is there? If you can get a used RED ONE body now for a reasonable price, you can probably buy the basic required accessories for less than half normal price. If you can find a used RED ONE with a pre-approved Birger mount and Impero, you can use inexpensive Canon lenses and start your RED career now instead of 12 months from now. :)

Thanks guys so far,

well i came up with that Question, because i wonna know which is going to be the better B-Camera, and for me weight and size counts as it also counts when will the scarlet s35 be available? because i dont wonna shoot with a 2/3 sensor.

so if i compare the scarlet s35 vs. redone with the specs i know so far,
i really see no reason to shoot with a redone instead of the scarlet s35

Dose are my reasons:

-redone has the way longer boot up time

-scarlet is smaller and lighter

-if i want the same lowlight level then the scarlet i need to uprgade my redone to MX which costs me almost the price of a scarlet brain, so why not just buy a scarlet?

- i guess the fan of scarlet are going to be less noisier then the redone fan?

- the scarlet shoots stills and motions

- the scarlet is future proof, remember HDR mode, and new sensors, redone is limited to 4,5k

- so the only advantage i see on a redone right now, is meabe the higher frame rates? but how often do i really need that? for me, not often.

let me know your thoughts your reasons?

specifically what R1 accessories are you talking about?

Most cheap used original R1 accessories are cheap because they weren't very good, and most of the third party accessories were either to fix things (like IO or battery/drive and evf mounts) that are fixed on scarlet/epic modularity anyway - or they are basically generic and will work for scarlet/epic, DSLRs, etc.

Not to mention that any money you put toward R1 accessories is a dead end, while scarlet accessories/modules transfer to the other cameras.

It really is hard to see any advantage (except nostalgia) of an R1 over M-X S35 Scarlet. Even adding a couple thousand for accessories to the $7000 scarlet price - so $9000 - it is only $3250 more than the M-X upgrade to an R1.

Used R1s will be viable shooting options for a long time because of the image quality, but prices will have to drop to reflect the price of the competition from RED's own products. (not to mention the other players). Moore's law seems to work at RED too.

For the moment, RED One has one major advantage over Scarlet s35... you can buy it now.

Truly... but that modular design alone I feel makes it worth the wait.

Red One can start making you money now, Scarlet can't cause you can't have one yet. :)

But at this point, I think R1 rental prices are flooring, I've seen some ridiculous deals for well under 1 thousand dollars. When Scarlet comes out, along with Epic, I can see Scarlet as an A,B,C,D,E,F,G cam. Both have major advantages over each other, but I think Scarlet has a lot more current up to date tech in it, while R1 is still using the processing power of several years ago.

It took a lot of effort just to get R1 to achieve 4.5k and rec 42. Scarlet will have 5k (S35 version) and much higher bandwidth (don't remember all the numbers off the top of my head)

In the end, I think Scarlet will incidentally be superior to R1. It's just a nerfed Epic when you break it all down. More processing power to handle MX efficiently, more tools, more goodies, more everything all packed in this one tiny little thing. I think better frame rates too?

In a lot of ways Scarlet is far superior to R1, just how technology is.

I don't think that Scarlet that is actually 2/3" camera system can compete with compact S35 system like RED ONE MX.

Also Scarlet S35 is coming up "sometime" but that sort of "sometime promises" could be more "never coming"

just because if you want something like S35 sized camera from from RED DC then you buy today R1 or tomorrow Epic.

the 2/3 system is a different market, and you'll see it crop up in a lot of areas you'd normally expect, eng areas, broadcast hopefully, etc. to compare it to a s35 system isn't quite a fair comparison when it's simply, a different camera. SI 2K uses 2/3, and it's used in a great deal of movies, it has it's major advantages in what it can do, including being able to just house a sensor and a lens and doing some really neat stuff with it, like they did in slumdog millionare, just hooking up bare sensor and lens to a pole essentially and whipping it around and getting difficult shots. and the 2/3 chip allowed for much easier focus.

but 2/3 i think the main aim is to make a dent in the varicam market, as it kind of dominates broadcast. even EX cameras hardly made a dent. It's gonna be very affordable for the freelance eng folk, and because of its price point, modularity, and most likely amazing low light (based of MX technology) you'll be seeing it in broadcast soon enough.

to to ask if scarlet will be better than r1, a 2/3 vs s35 comparison just really isn't much of a comparison, it's like putting up a varicam against the r1, they both have very different purposes, and do things very differently.

Maybe it's big to you maybe it's not but RED1 does shoot 2K at 120fps, while an s35 scarlet is only going to give you 72fps. But it seems you can get a scarlet s35 and a cinema 2/3"(1-120fps) for the price of the grandaddy RED1 and have change for some bits and pieces.

The enormity of this is incalculable!!! With the Scarlet S35 RED will be selling a camera that can compete with (although nobody is competing with RED in resolution, not even comparable film stock) cameras that are several hundred THOUSAND dollars for the price of a high end DSLR(4 digits). Oh and by the way, it will compete with DSLR's too.

Even Epic will kill DSLRs for anything other than ultra-low budget work.
