  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Clash of the Titans remake - first trailer

Jeff, I hear what you are saying, in terms of Hollywood being basically untrustworthy at this point to remake anything. You have a point there. The track record speaks for itself.

I know I keep beating this horse, but I really, really think it all comes down to the director on remakes and sequels. Sure, the writers might blow, but if the director is good, he will FIRE bad writers and not start production until the script is in great shape.

By the way, how could they screw up the story for Clash of the Titans.. it's already written.. hahaha. But you're right -- the probably will!

Or for that matter, how can they screw up any remake? Simple, they re-write it! But why??? I have no clue... And yet these remakes all get screwed up in the same way. The story is butchered, it's like they try to expand on the original within the same amount of alotted time while also squeezing in extra action and FX.

I'm not bashing CG or FX work in general. I'm a CG artist myself and have done my share of animation work for the games industry. The FX or overuse of FX is not the problem here. Story is king, always. And when a studio, producer, director or whoever allows a good story, that most everyone already knows, to be butchered, then game over.

If Hollywood wanted to do it right and create good remakes, they should take the original script, find a director with passion for the project and say, "go make this film, and don't you F'ing rewrite it". But that isn't what happens. They decide to remake something, then they decide to rewrite and improve it. In the examples I used above; Day the earth stood still and War of the Worlds; the stories were destroyed before the directors got their hands on the final script. And it happens across the entire budget spectrum of mainstream film production. ...We couldn't even get a remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre a few years back that was any more engaging or less sucky than the original. It sucked even more, just looked better and more expensive doing it.

I just know that Wizard of Oz with CG munchkins is inevitable... Or how about a remake of Goonies, but this time around they're a bunch of special needs autistic kids with psychic powers. Ya know, they have to keep this fresh and in step with today. On that note, I guess I'd better shut up. Hard to say who might be reading this and I'm probably giving them ideas.

Is it just coincidence that I watched, WoOz last night? The ideas are swimming...

The CGI looked horribly fake (which used to be a bad thing before audience expectations were ground down). I'm sure one of the CGI guys on a Jihad around here will jump on me for that. I will save my money though.

Why would someone go on a Jihad for saying the CGI looked bad? It's true. There is some bad CG in that trailer. But even the worst CG in that trailer is better than the best stop motion in the original imo.

The Jihads start if you start blaming CG artists for ruining Hollywood and or movies in general and blaming all of modern movie woes on the CG industry.

BTW am I the only person who thinks that movies by and large are better now than in any other time in history? For every Transformers I can name 5 horrible 70s action movies.

...before we put it on the "director" let's not forget Ang Lee's Hulk...That was a mess. I don't know if there is a formula for success for this kind of endeavor. However I agree with you Tom. This was a film itching for a redux - How unfortunate that the trailer is tipping it's hat to Stephen Sommers and the craptastic GIJoe.

Yeah Hulk is something of a counter-argument, but I'm not a real big fan of Ang Lee to begin with. That movie was an odd creation. Now, give The Hulk to Wong Kar Wai and you might have something... ha!

No you're not. I concur with Jeff's comments though that the downward spiral in Hollywood quality is emanating from writing and NOT CGI proliferation. See below. Who would have Megatrons ass handed back more?

Dig a little deeper on Ang Lee's Hulk. It actually uses theory we can understand much like maybe say Batman Begins where fear can create/destroy a person. In the case of the Hulk, inheriting our father's weaknesses and demons etc... very good film IMO.

He dared to shoot those night scenes in the forest and at the glacier lake. The desert. Unique action no other film can claim. I can't tell you how many times I have heard people say how they hated that movie. I would take it over Batman or the like any day of the week. I'm so tired of defending my Hulk poster...

I can't agree more with this. Frankly that Hulk movie was well done just not mainstream.

That being said I loved the 1998 Godzilla movie, if they just had not called it Godzilla!!!!

A lot of recent movies in the past 15 years have been really good and well done story wise its just how they get perceived based upon their associations.

I can't say Transformers movies are great amazing films...but they are just simply too much fun!! People sometimes also forget that as well. So its a careful balance. I just think the Ang Hulk movie did not have enough Hulk. However Transformers 2 might have had a little to much transformers without enough depth to them. As long as Peter Cullen is Optimus it'll always work, people connect to that voice.

Anywho, many movies are in fact very good its just a mater of how your perceive them.

I just hope in TF3 Grimlock looks this cool

I always had serious issues with Lee's Hulk movie, but it's because I was a big fan of The Hulk as a kid and always had fun watching Lou Ferrigno cheese it up in green body paint. Ang's Hulk was not THE Hulk and in many ways went too far. Like bounding across the landscape in huge effortless leaps. I've been told by others that the Hulk does this now in the more recent comic installments and leaps into the air to take out fighter jets and whatnot. OK, lame.

GOJIRA!!!

They are fun. I did find a few scenes in each movie really took me out of the experience though. TF2's repetitive die and then come back to life thing really sucked. Both movies sucked ass, TF2 especially, but it's still cool and fun to watch giant robots tear shit up. I guess that's why I own the Blu-Ray for both films. ...I realize I'm helping to perpetuate this problem by buying into them, but like everyone else, I can't help it.

Dinobots! We'll see if they really get adapted into the upcoming films... Maybe Sam Witwicki will get sent back in time to find them or something. I'm sure we're going to see at least two more Transformers films, they are just raking in the cash and merchandising.

I can't believe I just read 4 pages of complaining about a TRAILER!!!!!!!

You guys should know better. If I had a penny for every awesome trailer that turned out to be a HUGE dissappointment, and every lame trailer that ended up being a religious experience when watching the feature, I'd have my own digital cinema camera enterprise by now. :)

Anyway... Ang Lee's Hulk was horrible IMHO. Was that monster POODLE supposed to be scary? I laughed my ass off. Transformers was fun. Transformers 2 was boooooooring.

Tom,

I am a Clash of the Titans(COTT) fan also but hope your wrong about this one. People are saying the same thing about Avatar, but we shall judge after seeing the whole movie first. As far as a trailer goes, your right. With any movie, I "try" to watch a movie and let it stand on its own two feet without any comparisons, but it is hard to do. The Clash of the Titans was awesome even if it is dated. I wish like others, that the script is good and properly executed with good actors and clear steady shots from DP. Anyway, here's hoping for a good remake but whatever happens the first, will always be a classic for years to come!:thumbup1:

I think Cameron is going to run a train on this "Clash" remake.

"I realize I'm helping to perpetuate this problem by buying into them, but like everyone else, I can't help it."

I'd like to stop seeing this "everyone" myth perpetuated.

And yeah, giving them money for audio-visual sludge is part of the problem.

You're right Joe. I should say "almost everyone". :cheers2:

As for Luis' comment above, he does make a valid point, in principle. But I think most of us have become accustomed to Hollywood trailers and how they tend to relate to the actual films. I'd say 90% of the time, if I think the trailer sucks, then I usually find that (to me) the movie sucks too.

YMMV...
