Anyone get a chance to check this monitor out at NAB this year?

http://www.smallhd.com/dpslr/

I've been hearing really great things about it and thinking about pre-ordering. Seems like it could be a great companion for the R1 and/or Epic and/or Canons. It has HDMI + HD-SDI. I get ACs asking to power (2) LCD screens at the same time. This looks like a perfect solution given the SmallHD form factor. I also heard it's very lightweight.

Thoughts?

We should have the interview we did with them up sometime within the week

Fantastic Monitor, side by side with the RED 5inch LCD it looks incredible

They are here in the town I live in so I am going to try and get over there to check them out some time soon. They sound like great people and answered a million questions I sent them.

One question I had for RED users, is it possible to adapt the red power to power these as well? Does the power module have a way to tap off auxillary power? I'd rather not have more things to charge and would rather put money towards more RED batteries.

I imagine that you would be able to just power off the Red d-tap or use the AUX power.

For power, SmallHD recommended, and I use the Tekkeon 3450. 1 will run the monitor 4+ hours or so, all day if you remember to turn off the monitor when the Red isn't running:)

I now have 2 of them and have it velcro'd to the back. Works great.

Really like the look of the new "baby" with HD-SDI though... I like the positive lock on the connector. HDMI works, but not as robust. I have chewed thru probably 4 cables sine I got the Red.

I'm a fan of these LCD's BUT there is one caveat - look closely at gray or shadow areas - the LCD displays noise in these areas - an artifact of the scaling algorithm perhaps? Maybe it looks okay on the 720p feed off Red HD-SDI (not sure)... It's not a HDSLR artifact because it happens on any 1080 feed I've sent the DP-1, and noticed it on the DP-SLR as well.

Just in fairness I want to point out this one weakness and maybe there is a solution I don't know about.

Not many choices for a monitor this high res and this small yet though, so I have to say props. And they are really nice people.

I have read elsewhere that others that have experimented with that believe it is a problem in the scaler. I can neither confirm nor deny, but when I asked them about this, they said they were working on improving this for future versions. Not sure what that meant.

Dan, they actually improved that scaling issue with their revised Dp1x and I also heard the scaling is very good on this new monitor. Did you check it out at NAB?

I just want to get this idea out there: get this guys in touch with mirasol or liquavista, they have invented color, 60 fps e-ink-like displays: very very low power consumption and you can perfectly use them with sunlight. There would be no need anymore for the viewfinder. I just want a free monitor if they ever do it :)

Sony have a new OLED broadcast field monitor coming out shortly in the $3-4K range.

In terms of image "punch" and ability to view in sunlight, I can't imagine anything that could top this but I believe that OLED is still not quite there for high end grading quality monitors yet.

Sony have a few OLED displays available for the consumer market and they look stunning - not HD resolution but the pictures look unbelievably sweet!

Rick,
I took a good look at this LCD and was blown away, far and away the best small lcd. It jams 1280x720 pixels in a tiny package (feels smaller than a Red 5.6") but is so freakin clear you feel like you can put your hand through it. The HD-SDI+HDMI version would be great for DSLR/Red/Scarlet/Epic use

That's all I needed to hear. Thanks Shawn.

Ordered one..

I did check it out at NAB - maybe the ones they had on the display floor were preproduction - but I have to say while the controls SOUND like they are a good idea - they don't really work as they should YET (firmware?), and the noisy image was still the same as my DP1 (which I just sold).

Hoping they resolve the control issue because the roll/click button doesn't really work in any sort of intuitive manner - at least the one I touched didn't...Perhaps there are no scaler issues on the Red One because of 720P monitoring? In any case - I do want one, but I may just hold out for the 5" on an epic X...Fingers crossed.

3-5 grand price point... compared to a 1.2k price point of the SDI version of the smallhd is a hard sell at this point. OLED needs to get cheaper, but the monitor will do very well in the broadcast market. Might start replacing out a lot of the Panasonic field monitors that are in use right now.
