Hi,

I am getting an avid edl to color in apple color. The studio wants back MXF files. They are also fine with dnxhd as long as it retains the Time code. When I export the files back out of FCP as dnxhd they lose the time code.

I have been getting avid edl files and putting them into color fine. Then I take the rendered out prores444 clips and use streamclip to convert them to avid DNXHD. They want MXF with time code and thats what I want to give them. Does Avid MC work with the kona3 or a AJA HDIO?

Is there a way to do this without gamma shift and color shift? What program do I use to make MXF files from the files color likes to spit out? Last project I did they said the DNXHD files looked great on there end but I was not there to proof this myself. When I drop a prores file from color in the FCPro timeline then view the same dnxhd converted file in the same time line on the same monitor it looks much darker?????

Thanks.

If you only have to do this once, the surest and easiest way is to download a 30 day trial copy of Avid Media Composer. If you have to do regularly, you can look at things like Media Composer, or alternatively, things like Telestream Episode for encoding. If you're adventurous and/or have some programming and command line chops, you can look at ffmpeg in combination with writeavidmxf (type them into Google and you'll find out where to go for that).

The media composer rout sounds cool but I have not the faintest idea of how to work media composer. I'll look into it. What about these gamma shifts I'm seeing. I'm hoping once the file is on an avid it looks the same as it does on my FCP system.

I hate to put it this way, because you might misinterpret what I'm trying to say, but....

If you're going to accept the responsibility of delivering particular formats, you also have to accept the responsibility of learning the systems needed to create them. If your clients are demanding something, and they're paying you for it, you have to do whatever it takes to educate yourself to do that, or you have to turn it over to someone who already knows how.

Flame off.

If you have a PC, or can run Windows on a Mac, you can also use Avid MetaFuze, which can be downloaded from Avid's web site for free.

Sorry, how will meat fuze help me get them MXF from the pro res files? I will download the MC 30 day but will it work with my kona3 or iohd to check color and gamma on my cinetal?

thanks

You asked how to make Avid compatible, DNxHD encoded MXF files from Quicktime. That's what MetaFuze does. I have no idea what hardware you have and I have no idea how you're going to check something if you're not set up for it.

Frankly, based on your posts, I think your best bet would be to either tell your client that you're not set up to do Avid files and offer them something like DNxHD encoded Quicktime files instead (which they can fast import, assuming you make them in the format they're cutting in), or find someone in your area who has a properly set up Avid system and have them do it for you.

1. Layout to tape (HDCAM SR) , reingest with an Avid system.
2. You can try to look into Automatic Duck to see if there is anyway it can get you from FCP in to Media Composer.
3. pro res timeline, in to after effects, back at as DNx maybe?
4. FCP to Premiere Pro, than re encode as DNx?

This is why CS5, and Media Composer 5 are coming out, to solve all these multi software problems...
