  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

FOUNDRY STORM to rock NAB!

That's why as filmmakers we should focus on the story you create visually and aurally regardless of tools that are used. Waiting around for the next best or lower thing is never going to work. Jump in and make stories with what you have at hand. Some great films were made with all that "old" technology.

Michael

Absolutely true, but most everyone on this forum makes money doing commercial work, and commercial work is all about crunching numbers.

Before I went to film school I studied photography, and I remember a famous portrait of Ansel Adams taking a school portrait. The guy who brought us "the zone system" was doing a low paid gig. The quote was something to the extent of "everyone has to pay the bills," or "even masters have to pay the rent."

Whatever it was, that applies to most of us out there.

If a company is listed on the stock exchange a hostile takeover is possible, hard but possible. If a company is privately held then you cant force them to sell to you - you could make them a $$$$ offer - but then Autodesk would need to answer to its shareholders as to why this was a good financial move. (As autodesk is a traded public company). The foundry is privately held. The foundry isnt going anywhere - anytime soon

Mike

This is also exactly why The Foundry can actually get something done as a company. It is just so rare for a privately held company to do well in the software industry, amazing what being great people and working with great people can get you ;)

That is some great insight mike, thanks for the posting effort.

Hi Mike.
How's the mood at NAB. Anything cool jumping at you.
Have you shot with Epic yet? Please tell the guys there I'll have two please. ( like they will listen)
Is there a new FCP coming out that can take the R3Ds direct. I saw a line in the red web that it can now. Have I missed something?
Since you are the guru. Who better to ask,

Have fun mate. Look forward to the stories on your return

There's two apple events scheduled for Tuesday (vegas time) with rumors of at least a Final Cut Server announcement - and possibly FCP, new Macbook Pro and MacPro lineups. But it's Apple....so who the f**k knows :)

EDIT: "Mac Soda has been told by the company responsible for the event, Integrated Media Technologies, to immediately pull the story because it has no affiliation with Apple and there will not be any announcements by Apple. Maybe it’s just me, but if I didn’t want people to think it was an Apple event, I wouldn’t write “Please join Apple for an update on their latest hardware and software products.” on the invitation"

My biggest hope is that this kicks assimilates butt into getting layers and xml import. It does look cool though.

After the NAB dust has settled:

I do like The Foundry very much... but anyone care to explain why I should care about this $2000 piece of software for doing dailies if I can do dailies with a DaVinci for $1000?

As far as I can see, the main bonus is being able to cut up R3Ds? But that should be a free tool AFAIK.

does the davinci read .r3d files?

The blackmagic-design.com website mentions "real time grading of raw RED files" as applying to the linux workstation, but I found no mention of the R3D feature in the PDF manual, so the level of implementation has to explained before conclusions can be made, at least as far as Mac $999 version is concerned.

I'm not really interested in any software these days that isn't cross platform. We use both PCs and Macs (primarily PCs though) and with both being Intel based these days, it just seems lazy for companies not to output binaries for both.

The market is apparently still wide open for a cheap, cross-platform, colour grading/finishing app that can handle secondaries, tracking masks and R3Ds natively. Bonus points for forward-thinking S3D expandability in the future.

Anyone see one at NAB that matches my requirements?

Cheers,

Paul

Get ready for the Foundry STORM preview at NAB 2010.

We've been involved in this and it is going to be on every computer of every serious RED DIT in the business - and in every serious RED post shop -

So, what's all the hype about? I haven't seen any product announcement or preview or anything else except from the fxguide article that said that it can cut R3D files and apply some filters and costs 2000 dollar.

I'm puzzled, as it seems others are. I just read the fxguide article on what this is...seems like the primary function is to trim R3D files. But won't that be enabled shortly in REDCINE-X, for free? I can imagine a world where $2000 would be worth it to spend to have that capacity RIGHT NOW, but the STORM package isn't quite ready yet either, for delivery, it appears from their splash page.

Mark, can you shed a little light?

STORM is under development. Target release is September. Final pricing has NOT been determined.

The fxguide article does not, in any way, really paint the picture of where the app is going - "the primary function is to trim R3D files" is about as off base as you can get.

STORM is a workflow tool - it's a platform you can build on and customize - conform, edit, color, etc. etc. - the conform and meta-data tagging tools alone are beyond almost any app I've seen.

It's under development, I'm under NDA - but they showed many people short demos of the current build at NAB for some feedback and did a presentation at RED DAY. The fxguide article was based on a short demo - I think the guys just got excited about trimming. RED has stated trimming will be in the SDK - every third party app that supports the SDK can offer R3D trimming when that SDK update is released.

STORM has a much, much bigger picture.

thank you for the clarification...will keep an eye on it.

REDCINE-X is becoming damn good, damn fast, and the modular structure that invites 3rd-party development will make it better still...going to be an interesting next 6 months, as we see how far this modular framework can take us - for free, no less.

Exactly. Redcine-X is bad ass and you can do a lot with it. We use it every day in addition to a number of third party tools. But you can't drop DPX, TIFF, OpenEXR in the timeline, etc.

I've always been under the assumption that RED is developing free tools to enable it's customers until third parties embrace and develop more powerful tools for profit.
