EVF overly bright

Using a non-MX camera, build 30.5, the evf is overexposing the image. The LCD monitor shows the image correctly, and the exposure according to the histograms and output is correct. But it's like there's a brightness knob turned all the way up on the evf. The grey scale in the evf also shows that the first 4 light gradients are pure white.

I'm probably missing something simple, so please be kind to me....

Thanks for any advice.

Have you tried swapping cables? Sometimes even just unplugging and replugging the evf cable...

If that doesn't work, I'd consider a reboot, and if that doesn't work, maybe a fresh firmware install (time-permitting, of course).

Other than that, as annoying as it may be, just use the EVF for framing, not for judging exposure. Trust thy histogram.

HTH,
Clint

Great ideas Clint,
but we've tried swapping the cables, not using the LCD, did an upgrade... all to no avail. I've even threatened the evf with bodily harm. Still the same problem.

Dan, is there hot weather? Or in studio with much lighting? High temperature causes this here very often... If it is too cold then we get the solarize effect... but there you can help with heating plates....

Wish I could blame that. In a comfy studio... Camera temp reports ok. Had the problem from start up, let the cam run for an hour still there.

Did you in fact try to turn down the brightness? You have to turn on the EVF menu somewhere in the menus and use the rotary knob on the EVF.

ummm where? That's exactly what I'm looking for and can't find.
the LCD has it's own brightness adjust buttons, but for the love of )O(*&(^&&^ I can't find the evf's.
Am I blind?

No you are not - it is kind of difficult to find.

I don't have a RED manual with me now but you have to look in the menus for 'display' or something and then turn on 'EVF menu'. Then a small square will display centered on the left of the display. You can then push the rotary button on the EVF so select 'brightness' and turn to adjust the value. Maybe someone else can chime in where to exactly find it in the menus but with some hunting you should be able to find it.

Sander, I have the evf menu on... options are: Intervolometer, Audio 1&2, shutter, iso and varispeed. brightness is not an option
am I missing something here?

thanks

Dan, from what you are describing from your Grey Scale test it's most likely you have the Viewfinder DARK DETAIL enabled.
(DARK DETIL is intended to let you see into the shadow information, but as a consequence will tend to crush the highlights)

To test:

Go to AV menu / VIEWFINDER and see what DARK DETAIL is set to. If enabled, and other than 1%, disable it or change the value.

Or IF it is really EVF brightness you can adjust from the dedicated EVF menus.

To test:

Go to SYSTEM menu / SETUP / PREFERENCES / DISPLAY / EVF MENUS and make sure that is checked (i.e. enabled)

Then brightness is available in the menus that will appear at the left edge of the GUI.

Aww... that's where it has always been. Are you sure? I don't have the latest firmware on my camera, maybe something has changed. I'm going to spit through the manual but it's a slow download with my internet connection here.

edit: Stuart is right, you better turn off DARK DETAIL

ding ding ding ding
We have a winner! Dark Detail at 2% crushed the whites. Turning it off corrected it.
Thank you Stewart.

I do have the evf menu turned on, but do NOT have a brightness option :(

using build 30.5.0

thanks again

Dan, the INT in the EVF menu is the brightness intensity, select that and you can adjust the brightness.

oof... that's what I was looking for... INTensity, thought it was for INTERvolometer (time lapse)

Thank you.

I knew I was blind.

Ah INTENSITY, I knew it was something like that hahah
