I always thought that Scarlet was to be aimed at the professional indy market however it appears that it has garnered a lot of interest from the home movies market. My question is what use does someone have for a 3k camera outside of a professional capacity.

While I understand RedUser is a place of learning some of the recent questions have started to really boggle me as to why they are being asked on a professional camera forum. It should be taken as given that you cant edit 3k footage on an iMac from almost a decade ago. It should be taken as given that Scarlet will be released when its ready not a moment sooner.

There seems to be a deluge of people that believe that RED exists only to serve the future Scarlet users and that Epic and RedRay and other professional related products should be on the backburner, I disagree with this, I think that the professional products should always be at the forefront of RED's agenda as its this group that invested in th company and its proven that this is what the company does best.

I think that the more entry level discussion would be better suited to ScarletUser or DVXUser and keep RedUser for discussion of the professional uses of RED equipment.

Just my 2c rant.

Scarlets are certainly professional grade products too. Just at a more affordable level. Unless people know Scarletuser.com exists they will wind up here first instead as Reduser is linked through Red.com. Scarletuser isn't.

Yeah I fully get it I am just worried in a way about Red User being diluted by questions that can easily be worked out with common sense (Above iMac example).
I suppose what it comes down to is I am afraid of RedUser losing its professional feel of a resource as opposed to just another internet forum of consumer cams. I honesltly dont want to have to read threads about things like that here, I can go to DVXUser / Cinema5d or any of the other forums and read them there, and answer them there, I am not holding it against those people at all.

I think it's a safe bet to say that we've all learned much from this forum weather you're some highschool student or David Mullen or even the RED guys themselves.

The signal/noise ratio will probably dip but who are we to deny budding filmmakers and those willing to learn the same opportunity that we had.

RED's a revlutionary company that's helping democratize film making. I understand your concern however I think it would go against the very ethos of Jim & Co. to shut the gates and make a ghetto for the less knowledgeable.

Nicely put. :thumbup1:

Scarletuser has a lot of educational postings too, and some very good introductory guides to practical shooting RED style posted by Peter Majtan.

Well, it is only common sense if you know about these things.... someone going from engadget.com to red.com might not.

The official RED website contains very little info and the real info here is scattered around and hard to find.... so expect questions from all ranges of potential customers.

If RED are going to diversify.... you have to expect this forum too follow suit.

Well, I'll say this : you're a little better than the guy who thought the price of Scarlet should be raised to "keep the riff-raff out" (those weren't his words, but that's the sentiment).

Sorry, I wasn't able to find the post.

Also, I've never owned a (motion) camera over about ~$500 and know basically nothing about filmmaking, yet because I grew up in the '90s and was swept up in the DSLR revolution I am extremely familiar with digital imaging and computers.

There are guys like me and there are also guys who have been shooting film for 40 years and are masters of the craft but can barely turn their computer on to GET to Reduser without asking their kids for help. Guys who have a VASTLY harder time than I understanding Recon posts about noise floor and ISO and ADCs whatever else.

Which one of those groups would you allow on Reduser? Neither? Do you have to be a master of both fields? And how does one "graduate" from Scarletuser to Reduser? Is there a test?

REDuser Organization

FWIW - in a conversation with Jim at RED Day, he revealed that RED was planning to rework the REDuser forum to make it easier for people to access the "usable" information and cut out the noise. Specifically, he cited the posts that say "Atta boy" and "Great to hear" blah, blah, blah, as the stuff they would cut out or isolate (I should note that he said he appreciated such encouragement but didn't find it helpful in moving forward the forum discussions), while finding a way to categorize and organize real facts and valuable information. He gave no specifics. He just really stated their intent in this direction.

I think we all know how frustrating it can be to wade through dozens of posts that say things like "Now that's what I'm talking about." and "Couldn't agree more," when we are trying to find the answer to a question. I, for one, would welcome such a change. Of course, "editing" a forum is a slippery slope and I sensed that Jim understood that. But he is a decisive guy and I also sensed that he thought such a move would be a significant improvement. We'll see what happens. RED has a lot of fish to fry right now.

Seems about like what they've tried in the past, like with the "November Announcements" thread being closed and there being a "November Announcements Feedback" thread.

I think the closed Announcement threads are a good idea as far as singling out the initial announcement. They should keep doing that.

Although as far as subsequent Q&A in the "Feedback" thread that too got drowned out with the "JIM IS A GOD" posts and someone had to make a THIRD thread, "November Announcements Q&A culled from the Feedback thread."

So who knows what the solution to THAT is.
