  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB thoughts so far

as someone that has shot as much if not more than anyone with both the redone m and the r1mx i can tell you zack that you are dead wrong. we shoot american idol ford music videos every sunday and we use one m camera and my red#0031 mx camera and the dp constantly comes over to my camera and gets mad at me because my shot looks so much better than his (he owns the 7000+ s/n r1m). same lighting, same talent, huge difference. like many others you are missing the boat, and in a few months you will be wishing you didn't.

i can appreciate one man's perspective, but please go shoot several hundred days with each camera as i have and then talk about it, spending a few hours a day on reduser and being at a tradeshow for an hour can not give you an understanding of the sensors capabilities.

and that reel is 90% stuff that i either produced, shot or was shot with my camera, so i take particular offense at you saying it was just ok...please post your reel!

dino

Agreed!

BTW, Dino, what happened? You missed your flight? I was asking around for you all evening at Red event. Bummer you couldn't make it. I also did not get a chance to meet Graeme either :(

Thanks for your calm understanding guys, I'm glad this didn't become a RED fanboy flame war or anything. However, let me clarify, I wasn't putting down the reels, either Mysterium or MX, it was all beautiful stuff. All I'm saying is that it was just that, all beautiful stuff. On a resolution and technical standpoint, based soley on image quality, the difference to me as an audience member wasn't all that much going from Mysterium to MX even though on paper it is a huge difference. Also, the management and user-interface features of the Epic are indeed its strongest points and I hope those will indeed end up in the Scarlet line as well.

Mostly what I'm talking about is the mentality that I've seen time and time again, particularly with post houses. If one group or individual, indie filmmaker, post production company, whatever, invests in a product and a workflow based around that product then when the new product comes out, no matter how much better it is, they'll stick with their established workflow simply because it works for them. Now, seeing as how there are a lot of basic updates, particularly the startup boot time, that makes going to the new Epic cameras worthwhile, if sheer image quality is the goal then it may not be as successful for RED as they may think. Believe it or not, there are people out there who could care less about noise or will simply use fast lenses and/or complicated noise-removal software solutions all the live long day to make up for any apparent noise, much like what is done with even modern film stocks. Now what this means is that the weak point in RED's lineup, which also could double as its strongest point in a way, is the RED One itself, especially with the RED MX sensor upgrade. Hence why I suggest a different approach in the camera lineup simply to cover up this redundancy. I say all of this only for my concern as well as for the benefit of RED and its customers.

Now, I could just be worrying over nothing as I can't possibly guess as to what will happen once all the cameras are released, I mean, there were a few guys talking about how they had already put in their Epic reservations. However, the real battle is going to be getting a lot of those current RED owners (individual or company) to switch over to Epic and/or Scarlet.

I hope I made myself clear, I love all the new features Epic and Scarlet will bring to the table and my concern is only with RED's current approach in terms of marketing and real world sales results.

Darn! Sorry I missed you. I guess there were just too many people there.

Thanks for your calm understanding guys, (snip)

Thanks for the sarcasm Zack :arf:

If this thread is what passes for a Red fanboy flame war things are more civil than I thought :coolgleamA:

Joking aside, Zack is entitled to his opinion.

There is plenty of evidence that the M sensor can make great images. Getting there is easier with the MX. It may be fair to say that the improvements in the finished product are of greater interest to a bunch of camera nerds than people with checkbooks. Point taken. What I think has to be considered in the evaluation is how "in the field" operations are affected:

1) the lower light level requirement saves time, power and is easier on talent
2) using the stop you want, rather than the stop "have to" use to stay out of the noise floor
3) now that ETTR is not the mantra you are less likely to clip important image information in the highlights
4) shooting day exteriors is much easier

Full disclosure I do have an MXed RedOne.

anybody see anything on the Illuminas? They said they would be at NAB, there were still issues from the prototypes about the mechanical issues. I was wondering if anybody got to play with them first hand...

The Schneider primes have German build quality and smooth mechanics. Would love to shoot with them and see what I think of the images. Its like New Years Eve for glass-aholics these days. :smile5:

Cheers - #19

Any price estimates for the Schneiders?

Similar to RPPs, I think they're like $22K for a 5 lens set.

The Zeiss CP2s, the RPPs, the UniQOptics and now the Schneider Xenars have created a new class of affordable (in Cine terms) high quality primes. :001_wub: Happy days.

That said - hand over the Leica's and nobody gets hurt :yikes:

Peace - #19

had to work yesterday and today

had to work yesterday and today

we were doing the promos for HBO's show "Hung", it was a two day job that got extended a day, then i picked up a 2 day music video for SADE...so no party for dino...bummer, i did speak with ted throughout the night and others that filled me in and i was checking RU...so i think i was able to be there virtually.

cheers

Stopped by sound ideas to get some prod music then heard nab was closed! Sorry didn't get to check lenses and stuff. Thought they closed around 4-ish on the last day? Must be s new change.

I am stuck here in DC on some government work, I wish I would be there.
Any new 4K (3.84K) monitors anywhere at NAB?

Unicoptics
These lenses look like the RPP. They look very nice optically but are too big.

Have you held a Red pro prime? They're not small.
I really like the uniqoptics but the schneider's have potential as well.

The RPP are too big for hand held with the Epic. I'm thinking of buying a set of Cooke Panchro. T:2.8 may be fast enough for the M-X sensor.
If I need a zoom I can rent the Optimos. They are pretty available at any rental house.

To Zack and everyone else that attended REDUSER Vegas, I apologize for the snafu with registration. The first wave was rough, then it smoothed out. Hopefully the free food and open bar for the entire 12 hours offset any frustrations with registration.

All future events will be run a little differently. It's impossible to make everyone happy, so with that in mind, I'll go with my gut instinct and stick to it. Next up is an East Coast event, and a workshop that I think a lot of DPs and gaffers are going to have some interest in.

In the meantime, it's time to get back to the real world of production and play around with some new toys now that NAB is over.

Thanks to everyone that came out and made it a great day on Wednesday. Rough attendance estimates put us at around 2500-3000 people throughout the day, almost double last year's event. Wow!

thanks for all your hard work Steve,

one regret is that I wish I bought more raffle tickets. Didn't know there would be a Gearnex in there.

...btw, did Adobe ever award a second production suite? I still have my tickets:devil:

Great Job

You did one hell of a job steve. Thanks for your hard work. Peter Jackson alone was worth the price of admission. Oh wait....it was free:). Too many high points to mention.
Keep up the great work.
Thanks to everyone at Red Digital.

If anyone happened to see a Canon 5D charger in their travels, let me know. The guys from Finnerknowsbest.com had one at the event and it went missing.

Thanks!
