  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Avid buy Euphonix

Damn. With nuendo being one of Euphonix greatest partners, this seems to be threatening nuendo, and pyramix in some way, because these are the systems that took over their sales, especially here in Europe.

No to happy about that.

Not good.

Not good.

Agreed.

AVID owns Digidesign who is known for their poor quality, overpriced audio interfaces, crippled Pro Tool LE DAW software, and total lockout of any audio interface other than their own working with their software. RTAS plug in format while the rest of the world is audio units?

Will the same happen to Euphonix? Will I be able to use Euphonix MC Mix or MC Control with other DAW apps? MC Color with Apple and Adobe software?

I have an MBox interface solely to have the ability to open Pro Tools projects when a client brings one to me. Typically when I show a client Logic 9 or Digital Performer 7 we migrate to one of them and out of Pro Tools.

The most obvious limitation of PT LE is limited playback track voices. Crazy shit. The only reason for this is to get you to *upgrade* to a PT hardware based system for stupid amounts of $$.

Dp or Logic (or anything else) is CPU host based with track playback only limited by the drive setup.

AVID has now eliminated the Digidesign name.

IMO, AVID = Microsoft.

NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! Oh man, I this is really sad.

or they knew about the $1000 Davinci software release and figured they'd snap up a decent control surface company.

AVID has now eliminated the Digidesign name.

I mentioned this because Avid is restructuring and combining Digidesign, M-Audio, Sibelius into Avid.

Avid states "In today’s rapidly changing business environment, it no longer makes sense to maintain many separate brands. It’s also impractical to have multiple marketing teams, websites, newsletters, and separate methods for communicating with customers. Our new brand strategy is to combine everything under the Avid name."

In all honesty I haven't used an Avid system in about a decade and got out of Digidesign's Pro Tools TDM systems when the Mix Plus needed to get an almost mandatory upgrade to an HD system. At the same time Final Cut for video and every audio app were going to native processing. But both Avid and Digi *really* wanted you to buy hardware from them.

Given Digi's history of the need to lock out all hardware other than their own, what will happen with Euphonix? Will support and/or development continue for non-AVID platforms?

This is probably done with the idea that they needed to beef up the advance color correction and potentially expand it so there is software and hardware in place to take whatever you need all the way to output; many users have asked for greater control over the advanced color corrector...ultimately their intent is to provide all the tools needed under one name.

I started editing with D-Vision and loved it, but no clients wanted to have anything to do with us, even though it was faster, more capable and cheaper than Avid at the time...I had to migrate over and never looked back -it was fiscally the smartest thing we could do given the dozens of hours of broadcast quality output we had to deliver each year.

Has Avid been slow? Yes in the past it was hugely frustrating (and expensive), but they are really listening and hopefully it won't be too long before there is 4K+ editing, color correction and output.

The relationship they've struck with Red has shown them what listening to the user base is all about IMHO.

Given the fact they've also introduced the MXO2 is perhaps a sign that they will open the restrictive hardware architecture...but we won't really know in the short term.

Imho , this has nothing to do with color grading.

A colorgrading controller is easy to built for them, at least They were the 1st to do it many years ago, so they could easily get away with it.

Their seeing and actually understanding that no matter how hard they'll try , everybody has a story with avid and how they thread their potential and current buyers and clients.

Since many years everybody has seen that they charge double compared to competition, and that they have no clear idea of where there heading to....

When nothing could place them on the first place anymore, they just do this and by the competition out. They did it with Pinacle as well.

a decade ago, they could charge mroe because they were better. This is what has changed. As upgrades have evolved competition, Avid has stopped competing and now that they make paying clientele beta test as they stumble along, the writing is on the wall for em. Rounds of layoffs, rapidly diving market share and absolutly no reason to buy stock in em tell me this was not a creative purchase but an attempt to sweeten the pie.

Look, I'm no Avid apologist, I left them for Apple years ago (just like I may leave Apple one day if they keep slacking) but I think they've changed a good bit in the last year or two since they restructured/cleaned house/whatever they did. It seems to me that they've seen the light and now their MC software is at least closer to the competition in price. Since they're still technically the industry standard for NLE's they do have a little leeway to charge more for their product. At least it's not as out of whack as it was a few years ago.
