  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Will there ever be a Scarlet?

I must say, this thread couldn't be timed any worse - just hours before RED Day where there will no doubt be some mention of Scarlet.

Or, maybe, it is genius timing, if there is no mention of Scarlet on RED Day.

But honestly, I can't see that happening. There'll be some news in a few hours time.

Don't ignore the real overall progress of the M-X program to date, both software and hardware. Epic and Scarlet share a lot of the same components, and working prototypes of Epic have been in play since sometime in January though we have only recently been informed about it.
No we don't have a firm schedule but Scarlet is certainly much closer to being finished now that Epic is up and running. In a taped interview at NAB Ted said that they should be releasing production Epics in two to three months and Scarlet should follow two to three months later.
Can you plan a production schedule on that? Obviously not. Personally I think Scarlet is worth the wait, but I have no compelling reason to buy a lesser camera in the interim. Some people may have other needs.

Enjoy the ride and wait fo scarlet , shoot on whatever you have and enjoy the momment . When scarlet is released your patience will be rewarded .

Absolutely. Thanks Graham. It makes most sense. And whoever suggested T2i, that might be a good idea. Personally, I would go for one of the camcorders out there - the likes of the Canon HFS or Panasonic TMC-700 (sic?). These output better resolution, colour accuracy, lesser aliasing/rolling shutter artifacts, etc. though at the cost of depth of field and still capabilities.

And don't forget, if you do buy a DSLR or camcorder, a lot of the accessories are likely to be compatible with Scarlet as well.

It is not like Red are lazing off. They are working their asses off, I am sure, trying to get the best Scarlet as possible. And I would rather wait a year than have a half-assed Scarlet on hand.

This isn't 4chan michael, lets be mature.

Let's Not.

I think anyone in the industry is pretty well informed on the status of the Red projects. Your very first post out of the gate show poor demeanor. What other response where you expecting?

Even before you posted, you had a clear direction of your personal situation with your camera needs and projects. So again, what other response where you expecting?

If your first post is a simple matter of poor wording and timing, I will retract. But I don't feel that was the case.

Please enough squabbling about he said she said. Can anyone on the Scarlet thread who actually is in Vegas let us know the news and what the time schedule for release is straight from the Red today?

Don't have time to read the long thread about seemingly nothing.

But, Jim just said "In general, the Scarlet is 2 months right behind the EPIC(expected August, September at the latest). Things are finally running smoothly."

"The RED ONE will never come out" "Vaporware!" "This is a scam - they're just going to take the reservation money and run" "I'm done waiting, I'm just going to get an [HPX500/Varicam/whatever]"

Long story short, yes RED ONE was delayed, but when it came out it was a million times better when it was announced. I mean, 4K was only going to be out the RAW PORT but now we can record 4.5K on compact flash cards!

Scarlet has been delayed a lot from the original announcement, but if it was a choice between having what was announced then, or waiting for the new DSMC Scarlet and having to pay a bit more, I'm definitely happy with the latter. They're taking the time to do it right, and making a far better camera.

At any given time there are already mulpiple active threads posing this question right on page one of the Scarlet directory. If you made any effort at all to find the answer to your question you would have seen them. You certainly could have joined the discussion on one of those threads, instead of opening yet another one. That is just poor forum etiquette.

Search is your friend.

Aww cut some slack. Each thread that comes out has a different tone (when's the next update to is it even going to happen) and represents another victim of scarlet fever. This is the double edged blade of Red's development process.

On the plus side they listen to their customers and embrace the telescoping nature of engineering which leads to great products.

But there is a negative side. Promising something great then let that excitement build for three years with release always just a year or half a year away is gonna frustrate people. Now I am sure from a logical stand point each delay had very specific engineering rational and we certainly can't fault the speed bumps on the road to the impossible. But what happens every few months, at least to me, is burn out. It isn't logical it's emotional.

Most of us will come back to the fold as soon as it is actually released no matter the frustration.

The only thing I would fault Red for is they had such a big event where it is clear that thousands of potential customers are expecting a huge update on the scarlet. I can't fault them if they don't have update to give. I do however wish they had just said that they where not going to have an update and instead concentrate on the epic when it was clear what many of us expected.

agreed :(

I'm sure Mr. Bloom meant no offense to the many fine, hardworking gay, lesbian and/or trans-gendered magic pixies who work for RED ...
