NAB 2010: What is this?

[Martin Weiss]

Framegrab from the digitalcinemasociety.com clip from NAB 2010.

Anyone knows what this is? First I thought it was just like a cheese-stick, but why is it shiny inside the holes?

Any ideas?

RED user Joseph Hutson has some CU stills of the mysterious thing in his thread:

http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=43789

could it be a crude anti-theft device ?

[Matthias Martin]

or an electrostatic microphone? ;-)

[Emyr R. E. Pugh]

It's clearly a Knightrider interface for communicating verbally with the camera. I think they're calling it the Self-Awareness Module...

[Alexander Alexandrov]

focus distance sonar?

[Joseph Hutson]

It's a place to mount accessories Is it not?

[Martin Weiss]

Well, seems like it really is just threaded holes.

Joseph posted a whole bunch of stills over at Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=lf#!/photo.php?pid=811986&id=1620030223&fbid=1338831003738

Methinks you are right - when the camera talks back to you, the lights synchronize it´s words, right?

[Martin Weiss]

Dang, I had wished for an accessory that would record the distance along with the image - as was talked about way when the R1 was just a concept.

[peter roehsler]

microwave video transmitter?

ok - a guess: it´s a RED prototype transmitter, custom-tailored for epic, and it will be introduced tonight, right?

[Joe D'Arcy]

microwave video transmitter?

How about a digital cuckoo clock.

[Joseph Hutson]

Just threaded holes? haha.

That handle slides on and off from either the left or right side so it can be easily removed quickly. See the top photo, in that you lock your position?
