  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Timescapes: "Death is the Road to Awe"

Hi Tom. Wow! You have become a master since our first conversation regarding Seeing in the Dark. You could probably teach me now! Your work is really beautiful. You should feel very proud of your accomplishments. It's clear that you have a passion for TL. Now you need to take the next step and tell a story that combines both worlds that you've mastered. A day in the life type thing. I don't know of anyone in the ASC that is doing such quality work. You may have become the tip of the pencil. Hey.....are you going to NAB? I am going tomorrow for the day to see my friends at Red. If so, it would be good to see you. Best, Francis Kenny, ASC

Beautiful. It is such a shame that you won't get to finish at 4k Tom. :( A lot of your shots seem like they would scream in 4k. Why not go for it? The way I see it, if I were sitting in a theater with a 4k projection I would forget the sudden resolution drop for of overcranked shots as soon as the next downsampled shot came on. Perhaps with a few seconds of 25fps 4.5k in between (or 30fps if possible?) to smoothen out the detail jump between the 3k and 6k?

Well... if I got into Tattoo.....

Francis...thanks for such kind words. Yes, I just arrived at NAB and should be at Red Day tomorrow around 5pm. I'll ask around for you.

Nice work, Tom, as usual.

I got some shots of the milky way in Tassie with EOS 1D IV using 24mm f/1.4 II lens WFO. Interestingly, the MP 14mm seems to produce much better results, even with the 50D.

Some frames from the shoot attached.

really outstanding. i wonder if there is a way to correct for the barrel distortion in the panning wide angle shots? i imagine there is but i actually kind of like the way the stars warp as they glide through the camera frame!

Wow! Some magical stuff happens in the desert and you're capturing a piece of it. Luv the 50 fps footage of the Dine' kid. I too would like to see some more mixing of more framerates and resolution. Some vistas beg for a longer deeper look at high rez. Maybe matching the cadence of the pans to keep it tied together. This thing has a hold on you though and can't wait to see where it goes. Enjoy the cold while it's there. Ya'at'eeh

Tom,

Will any of your future timescape projects be in 3D?

Not for "Southwest Light," but I am very interested in 3D for my next film. Perhaps an IMAX 3D film shot in China. 4K 3D? Is there such a thing yet? Any way to project 4K 3D?

very nice tom, as always. nice score selection from the fountain as well! fits perfectly.
