Hey guys, just thought I'd post my findings and thoughts about some products at NAB this year. Here goes:

1. Arri - Alexa has a cool workflow situation but the image quality isn't anything to get too excited over. It simply comes off as the RED camera with an Arri logo on it, I don't think users will find their footage looking any better than if they had used a RED. But in any case, it's good that there are options out there and it puts film even further into the coffin. The new Fujinon zooms are awesome as well.

2. Zeiss - Compact primes are cool with the interchangeable mounts and all, although they are pretty big so I wouldn't plan on lugging a set of these around for pure still photography work.

3. Litepanels - The Sola Fresnels... buy/rent these things right now! All the possibilities for lighting with these is just mind blowing. I just wish they weren't as pricey, but ultimately they'll end up being big rental items anyway. Got some prices though I don't remember the exact numbers: ENG Sola - $650, 650w Sola - $1,600-ish(?), 2K Sola - $2400-ish(?)

4. 3D in general - Not much really. Most of the stuff being shown has been shown already last year, lots of very lame solutions that just look off every time, obviously still working on it. Lots of two-cam rigs so there's your new market for the meantime while...

5. Panasonic - Panasonic's 3D camera dominates their booth and although it's cool and all, I just don't see it really taking off over two camera rigs. The 3D, again, just doesn't look any better than if you stuck two cameras together. Having it in one camera helps make it easier but it still needs some work if they want to sell a lot of them. I think it ultimately is the failure of the side-by-side approach, the prism mirror box method is just the better way to do it. Their micro 4/3 camera is cool but it comes out in December and Scarlet should be out in full force by then so it's going to be a little too late for many. If they really wanted to change things up they should just release a firmware update for the GH1 to up the bitrate and enable uncompressed HDMI-output or release a GH2 with this features NOW and not LATER, that would be more than enough to insure the success of Micro 4/3 and this camera's success.

6. Canon - Ain't got nuttin' as far as new stuff since they announced the XH-series replacements last week. They do have lots of their vDSLR offerings all over the place though, so that should be a message to everyone.

7. JVC - Poor JVC, left out in the rain again this year. Just a minor bump to their existing camera. I haven't seen the 4K camera yet, didn't get a chance to look yesterday. But not too much action going on there.

8. Adobe - Insane crowds all day long, CS5 is a hit!

There's more to talk about but I've got to head on over there. I'll post up more stuff later. Others feel free to post their thoughts as well.

I would buy the 3D camera given the cash/50% discount.

I like the thinking behind a fully self contained 3D camcorder. Not for shooting features or anything but for doc/tv work and low budget promos.

As long as the 3D isn't migraine inducing or all ghosty I don't mind. Just not at this pricepoint though. Living in England we often get shafted over companies sterling/dollar conversion rates (i.e $1=£1).

thanks for sharing.

Like to hear more if anything is a must see!

3d camera also has some small places in advertisement. Dunno how many are from NY, but if you've seen some of the 3d advertisements they've had around the city lately, little spots like that in our daily life minority report style, i see happening with panny's camera. P2 is already broadcast integrated, Panny has a standing reputation with companies across the board, and it's cheaper than 2 red's :)

I'm actually loving the small stuff i'm getting snippets of online. The new Steadicam tango looks really awesome, can't wait to see music videos with that applied tech. (and scarlet/epic on one of those)

Aaton and Alexa are probably the biggest players, but you see that GOPRO? it's just awesome... the applications of that are ridiculous!

since i'm not there, can you give anymore updates on any new lenses that are being announced? or is there at least a look at the new leica primes?

and i can't believe nobody is screaming all over the boards about wha'ts happening with RED right now at their event this week : \

it's not until tomorrow. I'm sure that you will hear lots of screaming.

the little GoPro is tight - $200, waterproof, and full 1080, how could I not buy one? also they will shortly be releasing a little watertight stereo housing for two of them side by side...damn cool little gadgets. wish I had one on my river trip.

So far no sign of the one Sony cam I really wanted to see; the single lens, twin 3CCD ENG cam as it is rather intriguing technically. If it is out there, and I'm being blind, lemme know please!

The P1 appears to be a commercialisation of the camera line that began life with the separate block F950 they put together for Pace/Cameron. Good to see it out there, as while HD-CAM SR might not be everyones cup of tea, there is an undeniably substantial installed base out there, and more, high quality, natively acquired 3D can only be a good thing if 3D is the future.

The software side is exciting; lots of Colour Correction tools being released as affordable, software only bundles; especially for Mac. CS5 looks really impressive and Apple have finally offered a better than 1440x900 screen on the 15 MBP.

Anyway, roll on Wednesday!

Forgot to say I'm loving the Delta. I do live in hope that someone will be able to come up with a way of mounting a S35 Scarlet into an older Aaton mag for a budget alternative to the P&S SR2/3 digimag.

thanks for this very helpful when we are stuck in LA working,

question? is my footage at the adobe booth???

dino

Any onboard monitors of mention? For use for the RED ONE and DSLRs?

not to mention the 3d housing and link cable they are gonna offer. we are gonna see a ton of extreme sports stuff, candid cameras, enormous multi cam shoots, and corporate and military applications too.

oh 5 bux says crank 3 will be shot on 1000 of these.

Thanks Zack for the update!
Can anyone please let me know if you run into a 3D monitoring solution for in the field work. I know panasonic has a 25" version of the BVH in 3D for around 10 grand...I'm looking for something cheaper than that and the transvideo offering.
Thanks!
Eli

As I said before an old RED1-MX is still better deal price/performance wise than a bit expensive and also heavy ALEXA.

Texting from fcp user group event. Everyone needs to buy an iPhone/ipod touch/ipad for all the cool film apps. Moviola - look it up, working on Avid and Adobe versions. Everybody here has a Canon vdslr of some kind - very jealous. Won $700 of Artbeats footage coupons so far and 2 kata backpacks. Sorry didn't find any other 3d lcds than those mentioned :(. Jvc 4k camera in different hall, will check out later. Panasonic 3d camera can't run without two cards in it, no 2d mode, just use one video channel, also can't display 3d really in lcd or viewfinder, need polarized glasses(?), also about as big as an hmc150, no filters possible without mattebox. Also, they have no plans to work on a new anamorphic adapter for hd... grrrrr. Presentations starting got to go.

Smallhd has great stuff, dp1(?) would be great with red I think, very Sharp looking. Cedar audio has a software version of their audio cleanup tech for$3700. Transvideo 3d production lcd, though mentioned is $6k, 4k lcd is $60k or so. Will check more lenses tomorrow if possible due to red party.

FCP user group? Any new rumors?

Also before I go, blackmagic designs has a whole bunch of usb 3.0 versions of their products and 3d versions as well, useful only if. you have usb 3.0 of course. Very cool and useful, just works by thelook of it, aja may have some tough competition now, play catchup.
