  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC images...

I hear the whole... "RED is too compressed" argument floating around a lot... seems kind of irrelevant to me, the compression ratio... what is important is how robust the recorded image is... whatever it's data rate.

I have yet to see compression artifacting in the r3d file. Compression artifacts really come into play when going to "other" codecs.

Before REDCODE you needed a refridgerator sized raid to record 4k streams. Anyone complaining about r3d compression is not really aware of what RED has really given us.

I think folks still underestimate the power of REDCODE and the amazing things you guys have done with compression. Seeing RED RAY @ 10megabits/second on more than one occasion is proof ...

I look forward to seeing the redray codec spreading its wings. I think it has huge potential as a delivery codec online as well

Are you guys going to be demonstrating any of the electronic focus pulls @ NAB? If so, will someone PLEASE get some footage of that! :) I use a slider (similar to this one: http://zazaslider.com/gallery.html) that I custom built. It's great for short dolly shots, but doing a rack focus WHILE sliding should be something shown at Circ de Soleil! :) I am REALLY interested in either using a couple buttons to switch back and forth, or have a second person operate on the redmote.

Further, are you supporting any user customizable focus curves between multiple points?

This will NOT be shown working at NAB. It is working in engineering but not in a build yet.

If everything was working in camera... we would be shipping. :-)

Jim

Cool Slider Rick! We will not be showing focus pulls at NAB unfortunately... too much other stuff going on :)

A few Q's.
Does a REDVOLT come with the side handle?
How much are REDVOLTS?

BATTERY MODULE – (with two standard batteries) – $1,250

I don't think we know how much they cost individually.

You mentioned these were shot using RPP's, so does that mean the f stop is communicating with the body?

No. This just shows what is on the interface. We set it manually.

Jim

I hear "RED is too compressed".

it's one of those *talking points* that permeates discussion, but people forget that talking points are supposed to be backed up by actual supporting information... proof is in the images...

The monitor out overlay has alot of simulated bits in it still.. that is one of them ( along with audio and some other graphics ).

But, on Epic you can manually program into the camera metadata things like F-stop and Focal Length on lenses that do not send data to make sure that info is there all the way down the road.

Very cool. I hope there is a simple way to do this to make it a painless part of "tagging" it for each take.

These are pretty damn good guys. I'm so excited to use one of these babies.

Realy great for VFX shoots and makes virtually all lenses VFX metadata friendly.

This is a very thoughtful feature.

This is all looks freaking beautiful. I hope I can get my hands on the Epic on wednesday, even for just a minute or two! Love the interface, even with it being a work in progress. Love the auto-focus points, customizable too... And touch to track other points. All features that have been on my wish list for other DSLRs for a long time.

Damit can someone tell me how the epic syncs up with the iPad and iPhone?

Cheers
Jono

Thanks for staying on top of this topic and answering our questions—

only one from me, if you have two REDMOTEs, can two separate people be changing things, such as one is a focus puller and the other is able to change other settings?

Thanks for the update on the electronic focus pulling. Seriously, I am not disappointed, was just curios of the logistics in how it works. Given I will be a Scarlet purchaser, I am just enjoying the Epic threads while I wait. (And learning as much as I can about these range of products so I will be good to go when I get the Scarlet).

My excitement is due to the fact I really do not like the focus interfaces on any of my cameras and I really don't enjoy my follow focus. It's not a horrible design, but constantly adjusting everything so the rings line up with different diameter lens and different locations of focus rings, well, I am sure you've heard this all before :)

Off-topic but I was curious, are you planning to take pre-orders for the Scarlet like the Epics in the near future? I'm personally ready to get in line right now. :)

Man, it's hard to type while I'm JUMPING UP AND DOWN WITH EXCITEMENT!

Do you think there may be the option down the track of an app running remotely, either on a RedMote, iPad, iPhone or whatever to log focus points so that the operator can set zones in rehearsal and then just hit 'go to point 2' etc. during the takes? Just dreaming?
