  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC News...

Me and my friends used to say, we are stoked with mountainbiking because us, not the real professional riders, can get hands on the same frame and parts that are used by top riders and we are really happy.

I had never imagined that I can get hands on the cinema cameras that are used by Hollywood pros AND be part of the team even.

I'm thinking between the additional bits you get with EPIC X, along with possibly another 12 months to Monstro, Stage 2 is looking mighty fine right about now!

I would rather be shooting in a few months, and have saved on additional modules than wait.

To each their own but Epic is just that, EPIC!

Duh, I forgot about the modules. So the trade-in for the Epic Monstro is brain only, right?

I have jumped back and fourth from thread to thread and have kept up with all the new info, but where and when did it say we could trade in for
Epic monstro?

Monstro vs M-X are just designations for different sensor designs/tech, either could be made whatever size Red wanted (within reason). Monstro is already planned to appear in FF35, 6x4.5, and 6x17 formats.

I think you're missing his point. The R1 is designed for an S35 Red sensor, and Monstro won't ship with a sensor smaller than FF35 because the pixel size is so much larger than the M/M-X that they couldn't do a 4k finish from an S35 sized sensor. So kind of confusing that Jim would say the R1 is getting a Monstro sensor unless the R1 is able to handle the much larger FF35 sized sensor.

A couple of posts earlier, Jim said we can trade in for a R1 to an Epic. Monstro is just the name of the sensor chip.

I think because upgrade and trade-in are being use interchangeably, it's causing some confusion. I think he meant we can trade in our R1 for an Epic (mx or monstro).

Edit: Okay, I was poking around and found a chart with sensor sizes. What I gather from it is that there is the Red One body and the Epic body. There is the Red One sensor, MX sensor and the Monstro sensor. The MX and Monstro sensors both go into the Epic brain. The MX can go into the Red One but the Monstro will not (or cannot).

Amazing Monstro on R1 (future).

Absolutely fantastic news!!! :hurray::hurray::hurray:

LOL. So this is how rumors start.

Reminds me of the telephone game children play where children line up and one thing is said on one end and by the time the children whisper it down the line, it comes out different at the other end.

I don't think he stated specifically that it was a monstro sensor upgrade to a R1 body... he could have meant that you could save your trade in for future monstro brain...

wow, Jason is right. this is a game of telephone - perhaps Jim would be so kind as to clarify the statement.

If we don't execute a RED ONE trade-in for EPIC-X this year, can we hang onto our RED ONE through the next development cycle, without executing our trade allowance, and trade it in for a future Monstro EPIC model?

Will RED ONEs also be eligible for Monstro upgrades in the future?

(somehow these questions became one question, and I don't think that they're directly related...)

Yes, you can wait for Monstro upgrade and not used this opportunity, but you dont know what kind of trade in it's going to be. Can you keep your RED One when upgrade to monstro ?

Because to me the only trade in that allowed you to keep your R1 and get EPIC-X is by stage-2. This is why second stage is attractive and unique.

but lets say Jim said (read IF), you can keep your R1 and wait for monstro upgrade. Then maybe stage-2 is not so attractive anymore.

As for monstro, i havent see the details yet. It's still a gambling game perhaps.

Okay, I found the thread that has the definitive answer from Jim. Scroll down a bit and you'll find it. http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=40301

Basically, you can forego the Epic MX trade-in and hold on to your R1 to trade it in later for an Epic Monstro as long as you haven't used any of the options. And you can still upgrade your R1 to an MX sensor and still trade it in for an Epic Monstro (but only for the original value. not 17.5 plus mx sensor cost).

There is no mention of the monstro chip being inserted into the Red One body.

hope this helps a bit.

...talking about the FF35 Monstro sensor. Unless you're shooting anamorphic with lenses that will fit that FF35 sensor, I don't see where you would be able to use all that vertical resolution. I can and likely will appreciate the added horizontal real estate.

FF35 is actually the size of VistaVision negative..which is 8 perfs going
horizontally through the camera. Paramount promoted the process.
The second V in the VistaVision logo was an oversized vertical font to signify the taller vertical picture.

Paramount advised theaters to install the largest feasible seamless screen both as to height and width.
They also advised framing in 1.66 with headroom which would allow projection
in 1.85 and even 2:1. Paramount was emphatic that they were not to
be projected at ratios greater than 2:1 as "Paramount pictures are photographed with height
which gives them stature and an artistic proportion that is lost by reducing screen height."

The widescreen and flares of anamorphic lenses have come to signify
cinema with a capital C to some people. But there are other cinematic looks out there.
Monstro makes possible a look..process..and image resolution that has been gone since 1950's.

The good thing about Stage 3 upgrade is that you can get upgrade from R1 to EPIC-X and plus accessories.

Jim may agree to do the same for R1 to EPIC Monstro upgrade (add accessories) but so far it looks like you can use only 17,500 credit towards brain of EPIC – FF35 (Monstro) price only and pay for accessories on top of basic brain price.

A Monstro upgrade will be available for the RED ONE (future)... and yes, if you do Stage 2, you have used your one time trade-in opportunity.

Jim

But, maybe for the ones that go to stage 2 or 3, since we don't get a trade-in, to monstro, maybe we could get a discount. :emote_couch:

Jim, it is your fault. You have spoiled us.

This is why it probably makes sense to do the upgrade to Epic-X and then sell the brain when you can get the ff35 or 645 monstro. The accessories are a significant portion of your upgrade price, and would probably offset the loss on the brain (not to mention whatever you make on epic-x in the meantime.) To me it just doesn't make much sense NOT to do stage 2 or 3 if eligible - even if you just turned around and sold the EpicX fairly quickly.

The difference in price between the Epix-X and Monstro FF35 is $5000, so instead of the $10,500 for the full upgrade from a Red ONE to the Stage 3 package perhaps RED will offer a program that includes all the accessories of Stage 3 but will include the Monsto FF35 for $15,500. That's the package I would strive for. I would have a year or so to make sure I have everything in order.

Sounds like the Stage 3 is coming up fairly quickly, I simply will not have the finances to make that upgrade in time. If I had a few extra months-- maybe.
