RED Hating

All I wanted was a Pepsi, just one Pepsi, but she wouldn't give it to me ....
Perhaps she misunderstood, thinking you wanted a Pepcid, you know AC?

Opening Line: I hate RED

Closing Line: Conduct yourself in a gentlemanly fashion, RED marketing team!

too funny

Unfortunately, there are a few long time hard core Red haters over at Cinematography that have a lhistory of slandering Red and Janard himself. They are safely on the do not sell to list.

When I do manage to get over there, I just avoid the Red forum. And because mentioning Red in any context usually gets you attacked, I don't go over there much anymore, since I would like to ask questions about lenses and lighting and general production issues.

haha thats great....thats like this surf shop i went to in florida....they have polaroids of every shoplifter up on a wall of shame, i hope red has one of those...seriously though I only started paying attention to red in like late 2008....I had no idea all the bullshi* that went on back in 2006-7 on c.com....I just red some of the first threads...pretty funny stuff

The Red One and the coming Epic and Scarlets are costing some well-established players some very real money simply by its very existence. The "Hating" means Red is succeeding in establishing itself in a very closed, and close-minded, market.

"You can't get someone to believe something when his paycheck depends on him not believing it."

That's a pretty funny thread - he's screaming about RED not having the measured resolution some mythical cosited 4K camera

Well in my opinion RED was kind of asking for it. When you post something like "No uprezzing or pixel shifting spoken here" as your slogan you're inviting semantic arguments about your "real" resolution.

There are two Reds. There is their Website: RED.com which makes claims which are eye brow raising and then there is REDUser where everything is prefaced and properly put into context.

Which reminds me, they really need to update the website with some more pretty pictures at some point :) It's seriously lacking with eye candy for us Scarlet enthusiasts!

And I got a good laugh reading all that as well. Good thing I don't listen to Apple marketing either! :)

If there is anything I HATE it's waiting for the Scarlet! :P

I used to have a hatred of RED, back when it was giving tons of problems on set, especially with the crashing and everything. With the new sensor and the new builds though, the RED is awesome. I love shooting with it now, and will continue to shoot with it in the future.

That being said, I still prefer shooting film, since it's much more interesting not knowing what you're getting. Getting stuff back from the lab is like waiting to open presents on Christmas, sometimes you get great gifts, but sometimes you wish you had stayed in bed.

However, one thing I definitely hate shooting on is DSLR's. I will do stills with DSLR's, but not any films or videos.

The camera was being built from scratch! 3 Years later they delivered and cracked heads! What do people expect? Sony has been building camera's for years and they still don't have their shit together.

The Japanese have a similar saying: "The nail that sticks out gets hammered down."

The Ozzies call it "Tall Poppy Syndrome"... grow too high and you are bound to to have an encounter with a pair of secateurs.

Us Brits love the underdog who "makes good"... but not too good, or we'll stomp you back down to size!

Well there was that period when the One was first released that Jim was adamant that they weren't releasing "beta" cameras. It wasn't for about 12 months that RED's official policy shifted from 'stop saying these are beta cameras.' to 'Thank you to our patient beta testers who believed in us.'

My favorite is the guy comparing RedCode to DVCproHD and says "6 times the resolution at barely twice the data rate" and the response is "and you don't find that a little suspect?"

Yes, I do. Why does DVCproHD suck so much? Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha....

Up here in Washington the Red camera has definately become the flavor of the month for indie and low budget filmmaking. I only worked as an AC on one film project all year. It was interesting to note the pros and cons of both systems. During the film shoot we were working in a dusty environment and had multiple bad gates. We also during the two months of shooting, had mags go bad. We had a lens element shift during shooting and didn't notice until dailies came back. When I compare this to Red shows I've worked on I see comparative problems. The difference is when the Red bugs out it's often beyond anyone without a computer engineering degree to figure out the problem. Simply restarting the camera to see if the problem goes away does not bode well with Assistants who pride themselves on knowing equipment inside and out. In the end I guess we have learned to accept the problems associated with film while at the same time finding the problems associated with digital cinematography unbearable. Remember that film has had over a hundred years to get where it's at today. Regardless of what Red or any other camera manufacturer says, this generation of filmmakers are all beta-testers of the eventual succesor to film....digital

Every day on set and all the variables that alone entails is Christmas morning enough for me. I shot film for over ten years too, so RED wasn't my first rodeo.
