I was wondering what will happen when other techs come into play? nvidia's cuda or another new rocket from RED etc..
Prices drops down?
anyone thinks that RED Rocket is overpriced? or its a matter of in what numbers you're producing the card? I would assume that the whole rocket processor is a small part of any of the new camera's (Epic/Scarlet) ASIC,, and camera also contains sensor and other stuff that makes the cost goes higher for the camera that is priced cheaper than RED Rocket..

thoughts?

Welcome to the reality of technological development. Today's innovation is tomorrow's obsolescence. If you think this is the first time this has ever happened I've got a truck load of old Digibeta decks and Apple IIs you might be into. Look up Moore's Law...

My bet is on CUDA. I just don't have $$$ for the Rocket.

Noah, I've got some old Truevision Targa and Radius Rocket cards that cost a premium in its day, but could give away now. Couldn't agree more.

As I remember hearing you can add Rocket cards together to boost speed and performance.

As soon as the software supports it... Looks like the Rocket can scale itself, so future RED Rocket cards could end up being multiple Rockets on one card. RED is obviously developing other technologies in the form of the ASICs used in the upcoming cameras, RED RAY, etc..

CUDA shows a lot of promise, but it still has a long way to go to be what it promises. Then again, same can be said for the RED Rocket to some degree right now.

It will all be obsolete at some point. In 10 years, my iPhone will probably be able to play back 5K REDCODE / REDRAY clips I stream over a 5G network.

But it would perform better if it were on Verizon's 5g network.

HA!

Seriously though, debating about getting a Rocket. The Mercury Engine demo with Red footage was insane...

anyone thinks that RED Rocket™™ is overpriced? or its a matter of in what numbers you're producing the card? I don't think that it's a correct assumption that the new camera's ASIC has the equivalent functionality of the RED Rocket™. I say this because as far as I know the new cameras can not output a signal at the full resolution that the cameras are capable of shooting.

Well what if you could just link the two? Then RED Rocket wouldn't die, you'd have a flawless machine no matter what K you were working at...

I think scarlet's will be able to feed at full hd monitors at full debayer.. I'm not sure.. but their ASICs should be strong enough to record full 1080p RGB at full debayer.. isn't that a spec that we know?

I know that Rocket can feed 4K.. does any one really uses Rocket for 4K output? I bet more than 70% of the guys getting the rocket is to have a 1080p preview and proxies..

I love my rocket !!!!!!

I'm sure he have the same feelings for you..:violin:

and why don't RED write their software and SDK to benefit from both Rocket and CUDA together.. guaranteed 4K output and amazing effects acceleration..

in fact I bet more on the CUDA side.. imagine that the more Ks you want the more tesla cards u need.. remember Fermi with Tesla flavor offer 6GB of GDDR5.. and that would be the same platform for the next quadro.. and you can add more cards if you have the right mobo/system..

guys, all what we talked was only rocket and CUDA.. isn't there any other techs on the way?

I own 2 Red Rockets and am buying a 3rd. I seriously do not know how people work without them, unless all they do is short form work.

Speed and Quality and both save or make = $

Prior to the card, it cost $100K to do the same quality and speed. Sell lenses that are sitting around, extra accessories, whatever and start using an RR everyday.

You wont know how you lived without it...

As soon as CS5 officially releases, you'll have a Mercury box running on the original Matrox Axio system, just blocks away from your office...!

We are really hoping the announcement/release dates don't get pushed.

I volunteered to test some 5K footage in a previous post...

April looks like it could be a great month for Houston Redusers..!!!

My RED ROCKET is already paid off from just a couple of jobs.

CUDAs already on the way out, OpenCL has come to take its place.

I think the point was that the need for proprietary hardware solutions for such things is either nearing or at an end. Commodity hardware, especially GPU enabled video cards, is more than capable of hosting software solutions for things like debayering and JPEG2000 compression, as well as a lot of other image processing tasks. And even the most advanced of the GPU enabled video cards costs little more than half what a Red Rocket does (without SDI outputs, of course). The only real issue is whether the vendor - Red, in this case - chooses to pursue the software route.

doesn't Quadro 5800 have an SDI output?
