Is anyone else scared that upon word of a release date/pre-order date that there's going to be a mad dash of people trying to huck their credit card numbers RED's way? I mean there's always at least 100 people viewing the scarlet sub-section and once word of a date spreads through the net that number will easily multiply, and well if you don't have internet available the day these things go on sale/pre-order you'll probably be waiting a few months for the next batch. I also feel like I have a disadvantage having never bought anything from RED and live in Canada.

Anyone else obsessed with getting their scarlet with the first batch?

Yea, i'm not sure how it's gonna work. I'd expect 100s if not 1000s of fixed lens orders.

Also, I hope that Red One owners who have taken their Epic option don't get further benefits... I appreciate that the R1 owners helped build the company to where it is now, but alot of us were not on the scene, or didn't have the funds when it first came out.... but have waited patiently since hearing about scarlet.

As long as I can get an s35 scarlet, I don't really care what batch it is. My guess is to watch the release of the new EVF. The old EVF is no longer for sale, cause they probably already started building new EVF bombs and will hopefully release them when they think they have enough in stock to match the demand, late spring/early summer. So how the new EVF's do in stock vs. demand might be the best indication of future possible back orders of the scarlets and Epics. Cause the old EVF's are hard to come by and a lot of people need them.

Yes, I am totally worried about it. I fear that the things will be in such high demand there might be backorders running into months. I am pretty sure there'll be thousands of Scarlet Fixeds sold within weeks of launch. I hope RED is prepared for such demand, as it will be nothing like RED One, which was a professional product. $4750 for a 3K product based on M-X is quite crazy, really. Even if it just meets expectations (RED are known to surpass them time and time again) we are looking at a Model T moment for cinema cameras.

We will have the DSLR folks, the EX1/EX3/HVX folks, 16mm folks, perhaps even some of those who were renting RED Ones or 35mm and can't resist the temptation of owning their own camera. It will be a mad dash, I am counting on it.

I am not sure how this is all going to work out. Especially internationally without a traditional distribution channel either.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out. It's been stated many times by RED and reiterated by others that this next phase in the developmend of RDC has to be handled properly and carefully, which is why everyone now has to wait.

I imagine, and hope, that a large part of the time prospective users will have to wait will be due to the fact that RED are not only getting the design right but also the logistics, so that they will have ample stock to meet demand - something that has been a continual problem for RED One users especially where vital accessories are concerned.

I'm not worried I don't need to be the first with the shiny new toy, though I would like to I can wait. In fact I would rather wait to hear what people like Gibby say about the 2/3" cams who knows I might change my mind between cinema and fixed, or even decide I need to step up to s35. I can't imagine why people are getting themselves worked up we have already waited this long, what is a month or two more. Now if you have a production and such to get done, (then not now) then yes by all means try to get it. But if you don't it's not the end of the world, rent another cam use an old one, or wait a bit and rent a scarlet or epic because you know rental houses will have them real fast. Either way no need to stress yourself as long as you are patient and think clearly this shouldn't be a problem and might actually work out in your favor or not but that's life.

keep on shooting
peace

I am pretty sure i read Jim stating that current R1 owners will get first 'slay' at the Scarlets when released. It's all part of rewarding early adopters. It's a great thing if you are one of them (i am:) and rightly so. The Epic rollout is also to reward people and rightly so there as well. This kind of business practice is missing everywhere in society and it makes one loyal and happy to part of all of this. It was hard and painstaking in the early days after people handed over large sums of cash and this is his 'thanks' in a manner of speaking. It's in no way to penalise anyone if they were not invloved from the outset but just to say 'thanks'. But he has also stated that there will be large resources of cameras available when they are released and so it will not happen as it did with the R1 extended rollout. And considering the lengthy delay in getting the ASIC rolling, you can imagine they have been producing large quantities of modules etc in the meantime. I wouldn't worry too much if i were you but i would imagine it would be at least a couple of months (at least) after they are released before orders are filled off the shelf. You have to remember that even if the stock is there, they are very restricted in only getting the cameras out of one office or maybe two. Where as companies with world wide distributors will have stock flowing in potentially hundreds of outlets. It will just take time to pack and post:)

I have also read somewhere if memory serves, that not all accessories will be available from the get go but considering that was a while ago before these 'brain' delays, that may have changed. So it may be better being a little back from the head of the pack and gear will be available at once. A lot of people including myself were caught for months without drives, EVF's, components in production packs etc. There were a lot of vital missing parts at the beginning which made life very difficult to get the camera working and this is all part of it as well.

at red day the question was asked and jim said that he believes they will be able to fulfill orders without a wait.
i personally am moving towards the 2/3" interchangable and am starting to worry that i won't have access to buy all necessary accessories to shoot upon receiving my 2/3" brain which would really suck.

So what's your guess ?
me ... 25,000 fixed units right from day one

Questions, not answers

Questions, not answers

It does seem to be a little premature to be heated up about this whole thing. Obviously, there are very many moving parts and none of us have a great deal of information.

I think it is safe to say there will be a lot of orders flooding in as soon as RED is willing to take them. Whether that number is several hundred or a few thousand, who knows. (The good news is that number will probably be substantially lower than the number of iPads per-ordered!) And it won't much matter if they take pre-orders or wait until they can actually ship. The time frame for any given person to receive their Scarlet will pretty much be the same either way.

My guess is the folks here on the forum will be the first to know of Scarlet's availability and so most of those first orders will be regular Reduser readers. I guess one real "concern" among many of us here on the board is whether current RED owners will get preference and if so, how many Scarlets will go to current RED owners. It is my understanding that there are about 7,000 RED ONEs out there "in the wild," so I guess that might be considered an upper limit - unless of course those greedy RED ONE bastards order multiple units!!! :frown:

Another question is the capability of RED to produce both Epic and Scarlet. Are they produced in different places by different teams? Will/can they be produced simultaneously or will it be alternately? Will RED create an inventory of Epics (or at least fill the initial demand) before they commence production on Scarlet, or will the be able to start shipping Scarlets while still filling orders for Epic? And the really big unknown - what is RED's overall capacity for production. Can they turn out 10 cameras a day, 50, 100, more? That is probably the biggest variable and will go a long way in determining how soon we will get our hands on our very own Scarlet. If it's 10/day, we could be waiting awhile. If it is 500/day, that's a different story. Personally, I have no clue as to which is the more likely number.

I know, more questions than answers. But it's fun to think...

And so, we wait...:emote_22_yikes:

I do respect the loyalty that Jim and the RED team are giving the early adopters, but when I comes to the fixed scarlets I don't think it should be done that way. Small Indie filmmakers like myself are desperate to get our hands on RED gear. I am one of the lucky few of my peers to have shot on one. A lot of people are just going to buy half a dozen or so to rent which doesn't pacify me any. I've been watching RED from the beginning. I've had a fully active involvement in the evolution of Scarlet through the forums. We've been waiting two years for this. Sure I have been shooting and carrying on with but until this camera is released and in my hands, I will not relax.

I hope there is an alternative payment method because I don't have a credit card with that kind of limit. Hopefully there will be some kind of international payment ability.

Its already been stated that red owners get first orders on DSMC's. A lot of these orders will be multiple units for rental houses or private production companies.

My guess at 25,000 fixed 2/3 units on first day was based on the fact that there are 7000 red one's already sold. They will be used as rentals, crash & stunt cams and personal travel cams.

What interests me is how many of these will be bought with intent for instant resale. I'm sure RED will not want that to happen but it will be hard to stop it.

Remember, those 7000 RED Ones have been selling over a couple of years now.

25000 Scarlets on first day seems a little insane to me, but anything's possible. 25000 Scarlets in the first 3 months, however, is possible.

I am trusting RED to have prepared themselves well for this demand, but I still fear backorders of months.

Hmm, maybe its a little high. But the word is out now whereas two years ago it was underground & unknown.
The price of the fixed is the same as an hvx200

It is a wild guess but I was figuring 12000 from RED owners. Remember some rental houses may buy 8-10 at a time. The other ~12,000 from first timers.

Yeah, hopefully there's a two or three camera limit or something because it would suck to see all the launch units bought up by RED ONE owners before we can have a crack...

Exactly. I am sure it would be that way. Fair enough that the early adopters get preference, but buying up 8-10 is simply unfair on the rest of us! A lot of us rent and have been using and following RED Ones too, but couldn't really afford our own rig.

2 per RED One owner sounds ok to me. Its true, rental houses would want to snap up a dozen Scarlets probably.

I also wish they gave some preference to REDUser members. :yesnod:

I would assume the talk about release and shipments were done long ago deep in the caverns of RED. What they have chosen is probably best. I'm personally not going to worry about it...

I have no doubt about that. I know RED's policy now is to make sure they have the best possible product available for the smoothest possible launch, even if it means delays.

Still, we haven't really had a product quite so good before, considering the price/performance ratio. There is always that uncertainty.

Threads such as these are what the people who wonder why it's taking so long, should look at.

It's one thing to have such great hopes up for...another to not meet the demand. But what would happen if these sold at record volumes and there's was the slightest glitch? It'd be a lot more difficult for to take back 25,000 units that 1,500 to get a key component to remain updated.

I think people need to just lay off of RED a little bit, knowing that RED wants the DSMC into the hands of the filmmaker MORE than what we do (and that's pretty badly). :)
