so i just finished grading a 4k 16:9 feature in color and have sent it back to fcp where it looks soft to me. even though i did export out of color as 10-bit, 1080p, prores 4:4:4, it looks much softer than the 2k proxy looked in both fcp and color. could the small difference between 2k and 1080p be the reason? or am i setting the render options in fcp improperly. i've tried video processing rendering in rgb, 8 bit and 10 bit. they all take many hours and all look equally soft. or maybe it just plays that way on my mac pro (2.8 ghz, 8 core but previous generation) in the timeline until i export the whole thing as a quicktime mov?

not at my computer at the moment but i can post examples later. in the meantime, is there anything obvious that i am missing or something i should avoid?

thanks

Did you check RT?

nevermind. i should have checked the basics sooner. for some reason, fcp put all my 1080p media back into a 720p timeline so the rendering looked soft and took forever. it was cut at 720p but i specifically converted it to proxies via clipfinder. i guess when i sent it back out of color it decided to revert back to the format it was cut in originally.

fcp can be such a silly goose.

...and it's ability to debayer the red footage isn't the best either...

How so? As near as I can tell from my testing (With the new 4.0b plugin) Color produces an image that is functionally indistinguishable from RC-X.

As far as the original issue goes, yeah, FCP/Color can bit a bit weird when it comes to scaling and such. In my experience, if you're using the whole "Send to..." workflow, it *doesn't* scale. 2K files in, 2K files out, despite what you set it up to do. Any scaling is sent back to FCP via the XML.

The released version produces softer debayers then other options. Good to hear the beta is doing the debayer better.
