  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi There im a fresh face and am going on a 2 day course to train with the system but what i would like to know is what do I need to basic red edits mostly for shorts and documentaries nothing longer than an hour.

at the moment i have a macbook pro 2.16ghz and a 500gb ext. hard drive
and am about to purchase a decent large 1080p ext monitor.

is it recommended i switch to a mac pro or will my macbook be enough to edit short pieces on?

many thanks
T-

some users have done stuff with their macbook pro's

given obviously the power of a mac pro is loved but Macbook Pro's, if you know how to work around the system and know the software and the time frames in which stuff takes to render etc. you should be able to pace yourself well...

It's a matter of testing your system and knowing what works best and what's possible in terms of delivery time versus your knowledge...

Hi T,

If you want to stay with your MBP, I would say your best workflow would be to transcode all Red files to Pro Res and then edit in Pro Res.

Any workflow that uses R3D files will be incredibly frustrating.

The only frustrating thing about the Pro Res workflow is the transcodes themselves will take quite a bit of time, maybe 10:1.

So put all your footage on to cook, go away for the weekend and then come in and edit.

And you will need much more hard drive space, particularly if you want to keep your R3D Red files. I'm up to about 40TB and counting!
