  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Amazing NEW Way to use RED!

Great Discovery, Jay. Thanks for sharing it.

Just noticed that you didn't mention what quality you were recording at on the camera. Does it make a difference in the SDI out image when you record 2k or 4k?

ok... I've screwed this up and getting replies in both places.

Crap... Mods can someone move the thread OUT of the RED101 DVD thread and into this one.

I am very sorry about this.. I posted in the RED101 thread and then realized this was more of a general interest thing.. Not I have two running.

This is not new and has already been posted by Caglar Kanber from Istanbul

As Caglar explain in his post there are limitations of file names and time code.
If you choose to wok that way you simply downgrading tour results.

David,

With all due respect, this IS new because Caglar is referring to a COMPLETELY different worflow based on Build 21 which means any feed from the HD-SDI would have frame guides burned into it.

Caglar's goal is completely different than mine. His goal would be offline files which would share timecode and flags with the online files recorded on RED.. My goal is creating online BROADCAST files for smaller corporate, B-roll, etc. clients that can be delivered immediately after the shoot.

As for the "downgrading your results" please read MY post again carefully, this is already covered a couple times. I expect people to be smart enough to know which solution applies to the correct job

Thanks for the input though
Jay

It says a lot if the HD-SDI live output can match the quality of a Varicam.
Thanks for the info Jay.

On a second thought, won't this be a "cut corners path" that eventually will make the Red a frothy camera?

Perfection is relative to purpose.

Jay, is it possible to apply an LUT that would closely match the SDI out image to a particular conventional HD camera?

why not use a Matrox MXO2 or Matrox MXO2 LE and capture straight to a macbook pro?

so you have all the disadvantages of the SI2K and the RED. a big camera that is tethered. no thank you. recording a less than 2k image that is not as good as R3D. even with a live signal theirs no reason why you cant transmit it, like you would with stedi cam in football games.

yes as of build 30 you can create a LUT in redcine-X and then upload it to the camera. you also have rec 709 witch i believe is the TV setting for red.

Personally I have found that using this new method really INCREASES the appreciation for RED's R3D files. There is a marked difference between HD-SDI and the R3Ds... However I am fully aware that many clients care more about speed and compatibility in post rather than picture (Hence the HVX200s popularity).

Jim and team.. Thank you for enabling this feature.. You just saved me a butt load of money.

With both EVF and LCD plugged in and the lookaround opacity at 0% you can get a clean HDSDI out of build 21.

But if you don't have both, it sounds like build 30 is the way to go. Thanks again Jay for figuring this out. Just one more option we (I) didn't know we had.

David,

You're going to need to be a little more specific about this. As for testing, I've done about 10 hours of testing so far. No issues. It works. It allows me to use RED in places where I could not before, it allows me to make money with RED in places where I could not before.. It allows me to offer a better look to clients who I could not use RED with, and was forced to use an camera like an HVX200 before..

So.. What specifically is your problem with all this?

It works.

In a world loaded with money (And all of it being mine) I would simply have an HPX2000 and an comparable Sony camera. I would use whatever I felt was best for the job, and then for stuff where image is king, and post is under my control, I would use RED.

But, sadly this is not my world. And corporate rules 80% of what I do. I can buy another camera, but I take a lot of capital away from RED and further upgrades for that system. This solution allows me to focus my funds on the better camera, rather than waste my money on a camera that will last a short time.

This is my world.. My reality, and I need to make it work for me. And becuase I know that many others live in my world, I felt it was important to share this information.

From the feedback so far, I think it was a good call.

Thanks for the feedback David.. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Jay

I agree with Jay, this has nothing to do with whether you can get an equal result to an R3D, it's all about those who refuse to work with the Red because of the R3D workflow.

Something I've never understood because I find it very fast and straight forward, but they insist on coming away with either a tape or a familiar CODEC.

Makes perfect sense and I have encountered plenty of backward people who share the opinion!
