The latest BETA version of RED ONE camera firmware has been posted on www.red.com/support - Build 30 RED ONE Beta Firmware, v30.4.1 (password-protected).

Note: This firmware supports FLUT and REDcolor Color Science for Mysterium and Mysterium-X based RED-ONE cameras, and addition of REDCODE 42 for 3K and 2K recording modes.

Changes since last beta Build 30 release (v30.3.1):
* Corrected default ISO rating for Mysterium sensor to 320
* Improved calibration for Mysterium-X sensor.
* Corrected CONTRAST value above +0.4 affecting false color display of Exposure.

ALWAYS READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS CONTAINED IN THE DOWNLOADED INSTALLATION FILES BEFORE PROCEEDING.

WARNING: AS THIS IS A BETA BUILD, THIS FIRMWARE IS RECOMMENDED FOR PREVIEW AND TESTING PURPOSES ONLY. IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR USE ON COMMERCIAL PRODUCTIONS.

NOTE: After upgrading firmware, a BLACK SHADING calibration should be performed. Detailed instructions are contained in the Operations Guide ( http://www.red.com/support/release_history/12 ).

If you have any questions or feedback, please contact RED Technical Support at www.red.com/support.

Thanks, BC

Is this just for MX cameras? Should I be using this as well?

Build 30 Version 30.4.1

Build 30 Version 30.4.1

Build 30 Version 30.4.1

I'm still on M sensor but anyway it's the best build ever.

NAB ready!!!

I'm on 30.3.1 and it sounds as though there isn't enough change to warrant an upgrade to 30.4.1 for my M sensor. I can reset the Exposure Index easily enough and don't use the False Color display for exposure. Am I wrong?

Upgrading firmware

Upgrading firmware

Elsie, for the sake of 10 minutes spent in upgrading and black shading the camera, there is no reason NOT to upgrade to 30.4.1 from 30.3.1 either...

Then it shall be done.

I don't like Build 30. Both RAW and RedColor look terrible.

OK, usual disclaimers, your mileage may vary, etc.I know how to install a build and do the proper black shading, could be user error, but I don't think so. To my eye, and my staff, Build 30 has far too much contrast and reduced dynamic range. The wonderfully smooth gradations are gone with Build 30. Ugly.

Just restored to Build 21.4.1, identical scene and lighting, and it's beautiful. I should think that would eliminate a bonked camera problem, so it's either some setup failure on my part or Build 30 doesn't like my camera.

I don't want to give up 709 and the stunningly beautiful images I'm getting with Build 21. Enlighten my please.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

Can you enlighten us with pictures please? I'd like to see that difference that you're seeing

I did not record with Build 30; "down-graded" to Build 21 after checking all the menu settings to make sure everything was at default.

It just looked like it had lost a few stops of dynamic range or the contrast was really blocked up.

I like to be as helpful as possible, but don't want to reinstall Build 30 to shoot tests.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

Does this "Corrected default ISO rating" mean that I have the ability to go to 800 ISO to get the exposure I have on 21 and will get grainy going past that or that 320 ISO on build 30 will give me the same exposure as 800 ISO on build 21?

320 ISO is still going to act the same, it's just that on the last build, it defaulted to 800, because that is the default for the MX sensor. Now it defaults to 320 if it's an M sensor and to 800 if it's an MX sensor.

Leo,

You can create the look you like, using 709, in RedCine-X and load it into your camera. Believe me, once you actually shoot with build 30, you won't want to go back. The goal posts, multi option button, etc. just to name a few. Not to mention the image quality coming off this build is by far the best yet, in my opinion. We finished up a 7 day shoot last weekend with build 30 and after using it and working with those images this week all I can say is, build 30 rocks! Just my 2 cents.

Very strange. I'd give it a second shot Leo.

You can still set REC 709 in the post tools. I agree that it is much more contrasty out of the gate.

Why not set a look you like in BUILD 158 and then shoot with that look?

After the GREAT daylight tests with B30, I'm now having similar problems as Leo when attempting to shoot under tungsten. Severe loss of DR and overall brightness at any ISO plus inability to balance for tungsten. Looked like the blue channel was completely absent. But the loss of DR and overall brightness was the most worrying. :(

I don't know if this is related to tungsten or something simply went wrong between this morning tests and right now (I haven't changed any settings). Hope it's just a simple bug.

Just reverted to B21 and everything looks great again.

edit: I performed the black shading in B30 several times to no avail.
