Why are threads deleted or closed?

I've had the tremendous rebel spirit to post a thread about the 5D firmware update announcement and it was just deleted... 5D was discussed on this forum even by Jim and nobody had such an idea of deleting a thread? I did a research if the news has been discussed on this board but there was no one.

Any policy change about this forum?
Only RED matters even if the thread is started in the "OFF TOPIC" forum?
What about non RED products like Leica/Zeiss/Cooke lenses or Arricams?

Is this forum starting to be snobbish?:sifone:

Don't understand what's happening?

RED products are great but let's keep REDUSER to be a forum for exchanging ideas and techniques!

Thanks.

Pat

Well, this is reduser, and not canonuser. There are plenty of fora that discuss news regarding their cameras. Here we discuss things of interest specifically to users of REDs products, and accessoires to them.

While I'm sure that there are plenty of current and future RED camera owners that also own a 5D, I would expect them to keep up to date on an appropiate forum. I furthermore believe there are more iPhone owners on reduser than there are 5D owners, I would delete a thread announcing a new firmware.

Somewhere a line has to be drawn.

Jim decided that Reduser should remain dedicated to Red and cinematography. He has chosen to refer other camera discussion to another forum. DVX user, I think.

You must be kidding Martin!!!

We are talking RED here but why just killing any news about the Canon Threat? This is ridiculous! Keep REDUSER opend minded please!

Patrick

PS: Don't forget that REDUSER is the place where many feel at home and don't let REDUSER become another AVID-Like/SONY-Like/ etc... forum. And if RED will keep making REDUSER headline, then that's great!

I am always one of the first people to jump in here and defend RED policies, and I really dislike Canon DSLRs (they are actually hurting my business), but I have to agree with Patrick on this one. As long as people are allowed to start threads about politics, favorite liquors, and "hobbies other than film and video", it makes RED look extremely defensive to ban Canon discussions.
Not that my opinion matters.

Interesting questions, Patrick.

I've noticed a progression of the forum that coincides with the progression of the business... and make no mistake, Red Digital Cinema has changed from a pioneering venture into a business. A different kind of a business? Yes, but still, a for-profit business.

I think too we are witnessing the last of the massaging of the early adopters. The concessions being made by Red in re: the discounts etc. for upgrading to Epic, and all other niceties, are about to stop. The purchase of the studio and the future of Red Ranch, not to mention paying for continuing R&d probably depend on maximizing profits.

When the R-1 was being compared to other cameras, it was fine to discuss how it stacked up against them on this forum. Now that the camera has become established, why give lip service to the ones who are trying to catch up to Red?

This is just my observation as a long-time observer, as you are as well. Maybe I'm wrong and Jim will invite all Red owners to his house for a bar-b-que or something. But go ahead and buy groceries just in case he doesn't:ciappa:.

This, to me, is just a natural progression of growth.

As a member of several Forums, and a Canon user, amongst other Pro systems, I don't find it offensive to me freedom of speech, if other systems can't longer be discussed here.

I discuss each system in the assigned forum, and or in open forums, such as Cinematography user, DVX User, Fred Miranda, Get DPI, Model Mayham etc.

DVX user was my first Forum, and the one I like the most as it offers an incredible large variety of topic to discuss, and always enjoy reading there, as well as Cinematography forum.

Just saying..

Before you guys draw too many conclusions: none of the moderators on this board are employees of RED, nor are we getting paid (except for 3 free t-shirts) and we are definately not policy makers.

I don't know who deleted your thread, but I can ensure you that it was not censorship.

Every Canon related thread has turned into a food fight. Just like every politics thread, which is why politics is not allowed here. Guns and "piracy" are two other issues that cause members to go apeshit and start arguing and getting personal.

Many of the Canon threads turned into flame wars.

Also, you guys have to understand that Jim is VERY competitive. I think that is something that many people don't realize. They see Jim as a benevolant guy, but I personally think he's a fierce competitor when it comes down to it.

Since REDUSER has become the "defacto" place to not just read news announcements, but also learn about the camera and technology offered by RED, I'd vote to keep the forum as RED centric as possible.

It can get terribly frustrating sometimes when searching for a technical answer to a RED related problem, and have to swim thru the waves of non-red related information on the forum. If I want information about other manufacturer's equipment, I know where to go. Just my opinion.

I completely agree with this. And I understand Tom's point about Canon threads getting out of hand. But I personally find these sorts of posts much less useful: (no offense to the original posters)

I've never noticed any disclosure on the ownership of reduser.

Is it owned by Red, or the DVXuser crew?

I have no problem with the "censorship" here. If I want to talk about something else, I am sure there is a forum for it, or I could start my own.

I'm also a bit disappointed in the policy concerning that.
Sometimes things can be understood with ease by comparing one phenomenon on different systems. Sure there were emotional threads but those were closed after some while. Before they got emotional they were very informative.
I thought this is a "reduser" forum, not a "using RED only" forum.
E.G. I asked a few weeks ago what differences in qualities there are in still cameras from different price ranges. As EPIC and Scarlet are supposed to be still and motion cameras, I thought it was good to get input on that. That thread was closed also because obviously discussing still cameras in general will bring up Canon or Nikon as alternatives...
Just saying: liked it more when it was fully open minded...

Probably I'm one of the most "hunted" Redusers in terms of "shut down" posts

or treads by both the "remote moderators" and their "mentors".

Even though I'm very close to "nail" 6000 posts here.

Call me a RED BULL just because I'll never give up.

And don't forget that I always have something valuable to say.

Even if I say so often: AMAZING.

Keep in mind that there is also DVXuser with an insane VDSLR section, also run by Jarred's company.

Posting that the 5D now has 24fps here is pretty much like posting about a new EVF mount on the lens test section.

But if you post about matching the 5D to Red's footage it won't get deleted. Several threads about that here.
