  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sci-Fi WWII Teaser -- Project Arbiter

Mitch, will do.

We searched around about a year and a half ago to find the tank, and a location to shoot. After looking up all of the rental places that we could find, and checking out the rates for some of the movie ranches north of LA, the director found a reenactment group that have been awesome to work with. These guys are way into the WWII stuff, and I'll often hear things like, "No, No, No! Only the SS would wear their cufflinks that way!" Their attention to detail can do nothing but help the project.

We also had a great concept artist, found on deviantart, I believe. His name is Robert Simons, and his website features some Arbiter stuff. Super-Duper talented. His work really inspired, and helped to set the tone.

It can be found here:

It was the 20,000 leagues under the see stuff he did that made us contact him. Like I said, we have assembled a pretty great team. There's also a good mix of practical experience with raw talent. I'm honored to be working with them.

WOW. That's all I have to say. Do you mind sharing your estimated budget for this whole project? Also, I just can't figure out how you got every frame to look like an HDR photograph?? Please do let us in on the secrets :) What are some of your lighting methods? What lenses are you using? Just tell me anything, this looked sooooo crisp and fantastic!

Thanks!

Some of the tech info is revealed in a post on Page 1...

I'm not quite ready to kick down the whole plug-in soup (post work-flow) that I'm using just yet.

I will, once we complete the whole the whole short, and it's played a few venues.

The budget is still up in the air, but the response has been pretty incredible and we now have multiple funding options to consider. Meanwhile, everything is moving forward toward shooting in May. Locations are locked, art department is prepping props and rentals, talent is secured, 2 more test shoots are scheduled... Everything is moving forward!

Just added a couple of behind the scenes clips to vimeo:

The picture in picture was shot with a little Canon TX-1.

The Red footage is pretty much as shot, and ungraded.

Shooting test footage continues this weekend. We'll be working someone else's film at the same location, so that is a great way for us to get the camera department to get used to working together under very similar conditions at the same locations. Prep, Prep, Prep! The big shoot in May is coming fast. I'll try to post some stills next week.

Until then, happy shooting!

So...when's the game coming out?

Hehe all kidding aside, looks brilliant, the character design is priceless, best of luck getting the short made, but I would say that you might want to immediately think of going feature-length. With all the work put into it, you might as well look around for an 8-10 mil budget, the trailer alone could snag you that without question and as long as you keep 'working smarter' (as you clearly have been) it will be more than enough. You have a high-concept hook in a familiar setting and the chops to back it up.

Unless you're European, there's very little incentive for an investor to put money into a short unless it leads to them getting a piece of a feature down the line (or unless they're angels).

Then you can make a game based on it too! :D I would play the HELL outta that!

second that....nice trailer & best of luck

Thanks for the input. We are going forward with the short. Everything is in place to shoot it at the end of next month. A whole bunch of furious work is going on right now. We have a few options open for funding, and are willing to self-fund if needed. Interest in this project has been crazy, and talks are underway for both gaming and comic book rights.

I personally would love a great diesel-punk side-scroller on my iPhone.

Story-telling is story-telling...

Easter has turned out to be a very happy day for me.

I just found out that Project Arbiter is currently on the front page of joblo.com under the title of 'cool videos from around the web."

http://www.joblo.com/index.php?id=31560

As a frequent visiter to joblo.com, I'm ecstatic to see it featured on that site.

Add to that, the disclosure that Epic cameras are being used in the field, and seem to be working beyond expectations, and I am one happy camper today.

I only wish Epic would be out in time to use on Project Arbiter.
(Or even my camera's M-X upgrade!)

Only 27 days remain until principal photography begins! I can't wait!

I hope that the final quality, and entertainment value of the short live up to the great press and nice words that we've gotten so far.

I promise to work my hardest to make that happen!

Hey all,
I just wanted to drop a quick update on this film. We managed to scrape together funding and shoot the short. 10 days of filming and it's all in the can.

Thank you to all that supported our efforts, either financially, or simply with encouraging and kind words.

I'm really happy with the camera department's work on this. I think that we may actually have something with legs here.

Special thanks to Scott Miller for doing an excellent job on B-cam for us. Stuff looks great, Scott!

I just watched the second rough cut today, and it's coming along nicely. We still have a ton of work to do yet, but more stuff should be available for viewing soon.

I welcome you to follow along with our progress, by checking out the Blog section of the website. There, you can find info from the director, Michael Chance and see some 'behind-the-scenes' images from the set.

And with that update, I'm back to editing the corporate, talking heads that pay my mortgage!

Thanks for sharing, cant wait to see more.

Best Regards,

Michael
