  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

After 2 1/2 years of following RED...

...I finally got to be with a RED One in person for the past 2 weeks.

Crazy how I can learn and know so much about a camera and it's company without ever having a "hands-on" experience. :001_rolleyes:

That's awesome. What kind of project were you working on?

A friend of mine was directing an independent feature film called "A Christmas Snow (starring Catherine Mary Stewart, Muse Watson, and Cameron ten Napel )

It was an interesting experience. Since I am used to actually doing something on a set and I didn't this time, I got to just observe everything and a couple of the days I got to hang out with a friend of mine (Anthony Tyler Quinn) who played a small role in this film and also played a role in a film I shot last year.
 
Actually I guess I did work "technically", since I was an extra in one of the scenes as I walked into one of the exterior shots of the airport. :P
 
Everyone remembers the first time their eyes were graced by the presence of Red. The Red team came to my high school to show off the cam and obviously, I was the most excited person in the film department since I was the only one that actually knew anything about the cam. It was love at first sight.

Yeah, it was really funny. The DP and AC for this film had shot with a RED a number of times in the past but when others on the set would ask them questions about data rates and how REDCODE was calculated they had no clue, but you know who did? The one who had never seen the camera before. :laugh:
 
I totally know what you are talking about. I have often responded to workflow and general camera function questions on this forum and I have never actually worked with one. When the Red rep came to my school, I spoke at length with him about both the One and the DSMC system. He asked me how much I had worked with Red because I was very knowledgeable. I said that it was the first time I had seen one in person. He laughed and told me that I must spend a lot of time on Reduser.

This is the place where we learn things like "set your RED LCD brightness to full brightness and then back down 4 buttons to get a proper reading from your monitor."

I've had too many people ask if I work for RED. My response is always the same..."I wish". Although at the same time, I am not sure I would want to work with RED.

Working for RED = long hours, hearing endless complaints
 
Man, the number of times I've been told that I should work for RED...maybe I really should give RED Pinewood a call, see if they're hiring.

I guess we're proof positive that RED's marketing strategy really worked out. Who needs to spend $$$ on advertising in American Cinematographer when theres probably hundreds of people like me on shoots who break out their laptop and...well, essentially do what amounts to a power point sales pitch for the DSMC line during lunch.

Are you kidding? I would rather spend long hours doing something so awesome than be in most other jobs...
 
A job at Red would be wonderful but I am sure that it would require a ton of work considering how fast the company moves.

That's this industry period... Average work day is 14 for 6/week.

DP/ACs do not need to know ALL technical data BTW. I'd rather know how to tell the story through the camera than know specifically data rate flows and whatever... I'd rather know FOV of a 21mm than what FLUT stands for and how it works (Just an example, love FLUT and Graeme's uber hard work).

I'm far happier and more hirable knowing cinematography rather than just tech spec of a particular camera.

Lunch is for eating and resting...
