Why RED over Canon (for now)

Times are a changing. Now is the time for any company that wants to be in this business to step up and deliver. I'm hearing from a lot customers switching from Red One to shooting Canon at the moment. The momentum is clearly with Canon for now in the low cost productions. Nikon has yet to produce an answer to Canon's 5D video system, however, they are taking video development very seriously. I would not be surprised if they don't release a product that is full frame and matches or exceeds the 5D at the same or lower price point.

The bottom line for any company in this space is to get on it and deliver.

I think it's more about budget, I try to shoot RED as much as I can but certain budgets just can't afford it, that's where the 5D mark II and 7D comes into play. Shoot with what you can afford.

Well, Red Vs. Canon is no competition. I have both; Red is film camera, Canon is a very good still camera, with the ability to film. Considering filming is Canon still a toy, but in the future maybe...

I don't believe it.

It's all a budget thing. In many cases a 5Dm2 with a good lens or two can be purchased for about the same price as a 1-week rental of a RED package.

That being said, many people are still oblivious or even just not concerned with the technical differences between the two platforms. Those who are familiar may still not care when the budget is on the line.

I personally can't stand shooting the vDSLR cameras. The ergonomics suck, the recording time limits. The skew, the compression, the line skipping hell. Too many limitations. My old HVX200 is superior to the Canon 7D in just about every way. The only reason people are flocking to a 7D or 5D2 over other cameras like the HVX is the ability to interchange lenses and get that shallow DOF that everyone thinks is so important; without a 35mm adapter.

But we have to recognize that with all the flaws or shortcomings of the vDSLRs, they still can be an effective tool when used in the right situations. For most production work I do, they're not what I want or need. Although the 7D has come in handy at times. For use as a primary camera for production, it's entirely too restrictive and requires too much attention to creating shots that will work for the camera. Anyone who questions that last statement has either not shot much with the 7D or 5D2 or they just don't care what the end result looks like.

With the 5D2, there's a reason why all the best and most impressive videos shot with it are taken at night...

Oh, and why do we keep having to discuss this stuff here. The Other Cameras link now goes to DVXuser forums. Please take it all over there.

I understand that this forum is dedicated to RED discussions, and I personally don't like the vDSLRs, but pushing all the discussions to a site created for the DVX100 seems a little hypocritical to me. Maybe the Other Cameras link should go to cinematography.com or something.

I think it was somewhat of a peace offering to those upset over the other cameras forum disappearing. It's a somewhat affiliated site (run by Jarred) that they could point to. But there are tons of places online to discuss these other cameras. Personally, I like dvinfo.net for other camera discussions.

DVinfo is a great site, and Chris runs a great forum, imo...

http://www.dvinfo.net/

p.s. dvxuser started its days as more specific to one camera, but it certainly has not been for some time. We try very hard to be as accommodating as possible to a variety of users and allow everyone enough space to where they hopefully don't bump into each other as much (though, that is always inevitable, and with the recent pace of new releases, even more so...) all the same.... if you don't like dvxuser b/c of its name... dvinfo is yet another great option.

Later,
Jason

DVinfo is great... so is DVXuser... so is C.com. Maybe even CreativeCow or DPreview.
