Hi everyone,

Sorry if this has already been posted. I just bought Bass Ackwards on itunes in HD and finished the film. I noticed at the end a SHOT ON RED symbol.

I was wondering if anyone had any details or insight? I loved the look of the film.

Thank you so much.

If you haven't checked it out already, give it a try; it was awesome.

Jonathan,

Thanks for the kind words. I was the cinematographer on Bass Ackwards. I'd be happy to answer any questions you have about the film or the process.

I can tell you off the bat it was about 90% available light, rating from 200-1000asa (accounting for some tough moments in the grading suite). Shot on 3 lenses, with the majority on an old beat up Nikkor 50mm f1.4, which I loved.

One-man crew, the director helped run sound. A few days during the shoot we were lucky enough to have a boom op.

It was a big win to convince the producer and distributor(s) to let me release the film in native 2:1!

Big props to Final Frame, and my colorist Will Cox. We finished on a Digital Vision Film Master. The secret sauce was in the grain we added =)

Thanks guys-

Yeah on several occasions, in an isolated situation, the colorist and I were commenting that we'd be hard-pressed to guess what format we were looking at =) I was actually not very excited to include the 'shot on red' logo at the end, just to keep people guessing.

And yes, 2:1 is a great viewing experience. It feels right for a lot of the work I'm involved with. I think what happened is the director and I started out committing to 2:35, and then over the course of the year it took to shoot the film, we slowly started preferring something closer to 1.85. But when the time came, I was not excited about 1.85:1 for the film, so I decided why not present the film the way it was shot!

Great Movie

Great Movie

I just had an opportunity to watch "Bass Ackwards" in HD via Netflix. What a great project by Linas Philips. Great DP/camera work, Sean.
