Just an FYI for those who like Mac but not the hardware prices.

I finally got around to finish building my first Hackintosh and loaded it up with RedCine X of course.

Exporting right now: FULL 4K TIFFs @ 1.9sec/frame .. including write-out to external drive via USB 2.0.

"Hacky" - a work in progress, to see if it would even run: specs to change as I throw more hardware in. Asus P5K-E, Intel Q6700 (quad 2.66ghz), Ballistic Tracers(ram) 4gb, Asus Silent 512mb video, one Seagate SATA II drive(500gb), EZ-Dock II external(Seagate 500gb bare drive at the moment)

Edit: well.. truth is there is more under the hood already.. just not yet configured/wired up.

Case is Antec 900
Silverstone Front Panel - 32 in 1 card reader, eSata, USB, headphone, mic, firewire 400, 12v and 5v.
LiteOn - BluRay player
Sony - dual layer rewritable DVD
Kingwin - SATA II hot swap bay (single bare drive--no special cage needed)

P5K-E - motherboard has SPDIF, 8-channel audio, firewire 400, wifi with AP, RAID 0,1 and JBOD,6 SATA ports, 2 eSATA ports, gigabit LAN...

I'm still under $1000 U.S. ...and it not only looks good, will work hard.. but it can be a neat "home" computer too.

Very cool.

i have thought about going the "hacky" route as well. Although I don't possess the knowledge to confidently build one myself.

It's not that difficult, and all the tools you need are freely available on the internet.

There are (were?) some commercial ones, like Pystar's Rebel EFI, but they were just selling packaged up versions of PC EFI (which is free, open source software).

Hey Brad,

It's not as difficult as it used to be. (thankfully!) Still requires a Mac to help you build the install USB key, etc. InsanelyMac.com has info. I wasn't going to do it because I didn't think I could.. but a superhacker/genius friend nudged/shamed me into it. I do have prior experiences building computers from parts on up, so I was o.k. on the hardware end(still cross my fingers and say a prayer before first power up!). I was planning just to make this a Windblows computer or dual boot Ubuntu. Oh well! :)

And.. the Snow Leopard disc is $30. It really does upgrade 10.4 and up, or clean install!

There still is a company over here in Germany that builds hackintoshs and provides the needed feeds for updates.
Over here it is leagal to do that.
I'm getting built a comp, with hotswap raids, CF card reader, ultra silent components, intel i7, 12 gigs of Ram, two SSD internal drives for windows and mac OS, bluray burner and of cause e- sata, fire wire 800 and USB ports. There will be enough enough space for blackmagic, redrocket and atto for LTO drive.
All with built in a nice rackmount and ability to turn of the fans for on set use.
They are really responsive and know what they do!
I can' t wait to get it. Checked out all the parts with them but the job that should have given me the budget got canceled. So I have to wait a bit.

Yeah, but Im not an IT kid. I need the comp to play and put together pictures :)
So Im happy when the tools just work. And I live in the same city with pearc.

This seems very interesting, what is the SSD capacity you"ll be using ?
How much will cost this animal ?

@Leon.. in the U.S. I'd ballpark that kind of setup around $1400-3000 roughly without the pro video cards/LTO. Lot of fudging because of the variations of i7, size of SSDs, quality/brands of components used, etc.

NOT offering to build it for you! ;)

Posting pics of mine later this week.

Aimed for the ultimate low budget DIT setup.

Core i7 is the cats meow.

Does anyone think more than 4gb ram will help with redcine-x at all?

Im just building a PC (on paper) at the moment to run dual boot, Its gonna have to be the new 6core extreme, on the EVGA SR2 mobo with plenty of RAM SSD and maybe a ROCKET :costumed-smiley-047
