My recent project is being finished on a Quantel Pablo 4.1 Rev 7 to be exported at 1080p. I need it in a format that will preserve the most amount of quality and yet a format I can open in FCP or Compressor on my Mac so I can do the various exports (DVD, Web, etc).

Recommendations? Ideally it'd be Prores4444, but I don't think the Quantel can do that.

Thanks Bruce! Can I then pull in a 16 bit TIFF sequence in FCP or Compressor?

Shawn, use quicktime pro to open the image sequence and save as a Quicktime Reference file, you can then edit with this (assuming you've got the drive space) or use the QT reference to export your PRORES4444 QT from Compressor.

Don't have FCP or Compressor on my system at work - but I have done it back in 2004 circa FCP v4 for an online.

FCP doesn't import image sequences directly - you need to set still image import duration to 1 frame in the FCP prefs, then drag in the folder. Then create a new sequence from that folder.

This is pretty retarded but it works. Otherwise, there are some Quicktime workarounds.

If I were you I'd just ask the facility to send you a test SGI or TIF file beforehand to see if your system can load it.

There are different flavors of SGI and TIF (8bit, 16bit compressed, uncompressed, PC or Mac byte order). FCP is supposed to load both formats but I'm not sure if it supports all the sub types.

Quicktime Animation codec.
Lossless, huge files but compatible with windows and mac.

An uncompressed 16-bit image sequence such as TIFF or SGI will always be higher quality than ProRes4444 and is pretty darn compatible. Try that?

Good choice but Im not sure if FCP or Compressor can do anything with the 16bit file, may be check it out with a test.
