  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So I know that upgrades begin next week (the 22nd), that they will generally take 2 weeks to get the camera back, and that upgrades will be done based on camera delivery date, but I was wondering if someone from Red could share what kind of timeline are they planning on for getting through the upgrades? Are they anticipating 100 cameras / week, 500, 1000?

As I have to send the camera in for 2 weeks, I'll have to schedule that around the various projects I have going on, so I'm trying to figure out around when I'll get the email, as well as around what time I'll need to send my camera in so that I can plan accordingly ...

If it is 100 cameras per week, then that is a lot longer time frame then if it is 500 or 1000 ...

Just trying to figure this all out ...

Maybe some of the guys attending Red Day today can ask this question and get us some kind of rough timeframe. :)

I hope so- that would be awesome. All I'm looking for is a rough timeline- I realize all kinds of things effect the actual time line, like how many people do upgrade the sensor ...

I really don't understand the two week turnaround. maybe they are just giving themselves some leeway until they get things worked out. Or maybe it's for extra testing. At least, by the time they get to my numbers, (Aug 2008 delivery) they should have all the bugs in the upgrade program worked out.

Hopefully too, when they've done the first upgrades they can give us what Ryan asked for... a rough estimate.

That was my question at the event, he said they will start out slow but ramp up as they get faster. They have already done a few cameras, a few will be out in the wild this week.

I'm sure it is to avoid the time suck of fielding a lot of "where is my camera" phone calls...they probably learned from the last upgrade program to build themselves a fatter cushion.

You can bet they will be pushing these out the door as fast as they can. They have gotten pretty good at it. I think they've already worked out the system during their previous upgrade programs.

Any specific news?

I would also guess that RED doesn't know, and won't know any real timeframe estimates, until they see how many of us want to pay for the upgrade. Unlike the audio board upgrade before where everyone should have sent in their camera close to when they were notified, this could be quite different. I'm sure that not everyone will opt for the sensor upgrade or may do more to plan around projects due to the 2-week down time. In the end, there could be a lot more cameras getting sensor upgrades than the ~2200 cameras that needed the new audio board.

And I understand that- but that would not effect their capacity to turn around cameras. If they can do 100 a week, then that would still be 100 regardless of how many people opted for it. But in terms of figuring out a rough schedule on my end, if I know that they can only do 100 a week, then that means I have roughly 40 weeks before I come up, and can plan accordingly. But if they can do 4000 a week, then I need to allow for different plans ...

they better :emote_rainshower: or else they will be left in the dust with an obsolete camera (not really.. but you better believe that the mx sensors will get the work vs originals..

"Anyone? ... Anyone?"

I'll certainly upgrade mine as I have features and commercials to be shot:)

I would hope that I wouldn't have to deal with any issues of having a new Sensor/Board combo as my Red1 works perfectly and has been amazing over the last year that Mike and I have had it.

Mine clients have already started asking......

Or if they aren't comfortable pinning themselves down to a number, at least i hope they will publish that they will offer a large window to upgrade so people who get caught in the middle of a project won't lose their place in line. They did that for the audio board, as I remember and things went really smooth with that, or at least from a customer standpoint it seemed to.
