Could be anywhere in the world today.
Man I wish these things would come out already!!!

It's like Canon are smashing it with those 5d's, everyone I know has raced out and bought one. They must have sold tens of thousands of them already.

I even had a major client ask me if I could shoot there AD on one.... sheeessh.
One minute 35mm film, next minute a canon stills camera that shoots video!!.

If only they new the truth about it only being a H264 quicktime with no range to it,
but they seem not to care.

O well, thats the future i suppose.

It's almost like if you cant beat them join them.
Like Betacam and VHS, the better of the two lost out big time.

Come on boys, get these puppies out now, I don't want to end up shooting some 8 bit video camera.

There is probably an ARRIuser.net somewhere where they are all scoffing at the RED one too.... for different reasons. (just an observation, not knocking RED)

Everything has it's place between barely usable and absolute pristine quality...

If your major client wants you to shoot on 5DII... surely the shoot will more than pay for the camera? If they seem not to care about h264 etc (by that, they mean... they don't notice any major difference, much like probably 99% of their audience) then so be it. If they are really pushing for it, then on their head be it. I wouldn't just dismiss it based on technical spec.... for SD work with no fast panning etc, it could work out well.

Correct Jim on all counts and we will shoot there job on the 5D2. Client wants, client gets. Ill take there money without a single argument.

It's more me wanting a better file to work with so I have room to grade any which way I want.
I just don't want to shoot compressed video and have no room to move and be locked into a contrast ratio that 8 bit video dictates.
Feels like I'm going back in time when I had to shoot Digibeta a couple of times. yuk. At least the 5d has a nice short depth of field, thats one good thing.

Yea, the shallow DOF can cover up some of it's flaws. The CC isn't too bad in post... i've had worse footage to work off.... especially is you dial down the saturation, in camera.

Obviously a major step down from red raw though.

Post up the footage if it happens... would be nice to see how you get on.

I remember making my first steps in digital music recording with an ATARI and CUBASE, as an additional to 24 track tape (don't know the english word for tape)
you always have to find workarounds. Educate yourself and stop complaining. Too much great stuff is made by guys who are able to adapt. I love the 5DII for what it is. And even if I won't work with it for theatrical release (yet) Im having quite succes in using it for broadcast. Just know your tools, that's my POV

We love the fact the so many people are buying and using the 5D. We expect that some percentage will fully understand the limitations by the time that EPIC comes out and be relieved that there is a no excuse alternative. The more that shoot... the more there are that will appreciate the best solution. We never expect to sell anywhere near the numbers of a VDSLR. No worries on our end.

Jim

I actually think it might work in your favour in some ways. The 5DII etc are bringing alot of photographers into the market that are now trying their hand at video production. The ones that start to turn a good profit will start to look for something that will offer pro imagery AND video (or at least use their DSLR and buy a 2nd video cam).

It's like when some producer doesn't call you for a while, and when they do call back it's for a better long lasting work relation. If RED delivers what we believe it will, sooner or later 5D users will fall back on it. I am saving a single dime for a good Scarlet package so I'm not wasting any on a 5D.

This is where we differ.... I am more than happy to shoot with my 5DII and have already had it for 14 months now and expect to get 2 years of use out of it before I get an s35 Scarlet... learning and shooting with it has been invaluable and fortunately it has paid for itself too.

Maybe you already have something nice to shoot on, but if not... sitting around waiting for your perfect camera is counter productive, in my eyes.

itd not about format or codec...its about story telling... 5d does it remarkably we shot with 435 extreme and red with 5d ...it came out as good...for a multi national client..they all loved it....so plz dont compare codecs or gadgets. 5d is a revolution.

jim its good to have an Epic but 5d is for 2500 dollars. trust me i have my own 435 extreme RED one and 5d....what 5d pulled off was no where near what others could do. its fast easy agile and cheap. but its not as sharp or etc but its amazing. 5d is like super8 or bolex of 2010 :)
