I was sitting down watching Back to the Future (bought the box set) and had Godfather 1 and 2 ready to go right after that...

Then it hit me...some of these films would be absolutely destroyed had someone done a remake!

So what is everyone's top films not to be remade and films that should have remakes...

Godfather could never be remade!
But
They definitely need to remake a lot of the newer films, i.e. Cirque du Freak.

It comes down to the original casting. When you see a film, and simply cannot imagine anyone else playing that role, and the performance is ingrained in our collective head, it becomes a 'hands-off' classic.

"To Kill a Mockingbird", in my humble opinion, cannot be remade.

"Terminator" cannot be remade.

"Mad Max" cannot be remade.

"The Shining" cannot be remade.

I'm on the fence about "Pretty Woman".

On the flip side ...

"The Aviator" was so completely and tragically miscast, it will need to lie dormant for years to come, before someone takes a chance to try it again - with the right lead. That should have been Hugh Jackman playing the role of Howard Hughes.

i never want to see a remake of

raging bull
fight club
dances with wolves
Old boy
last but not least
Citizen Kane

I would have said Star Trek, but I'm fairly impressed with what they did.

Frankly if people come up with good stories set in some of our favorite universes, I don't care if they keep making movies. The problems come with the tired reboots or sequels that don't add anything.

The subject of remakes always brings to mind L.A. Takedown vs. Heat as a prime example of what a remake can do to a film, especially the diner scene with Scott Plank and Alex McArthur as compared to the Pacino/De Niro version.

Anything that involved input from Michael Bay that wasn't already a remake could probably be vastly improved by being remade.

Good call although, same director but with evolved means and vision. Mann basically refined his own process and with new people.

Give me a Gremlins remake any day.... or Gremlins 3 for that matter. If they took that franchise and remade it with a dark twist (like batman begins did)... it would be class.

Never to be remade.. I would say Star Wars IV-VI ..... not that they were perfect films, but that I could imagine that they would be realistically considered for a remake and would be a huge flop to people of the original generation, like myself.

SHOULD: The Land That Time Forgot

SHOULD NEVER: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1 and 2

I liked Leo in The Aviator but thought he was totally wrong in Titanic. I generally don't like him playing anything but very quirky unstable characters. Jeremy Irons as a Hughes would have been interesting.

I think Fahrenheit 451 deserves a remake.

Good story but very dated movie now. Does anyone else remember when Gibson and Cruise were going to remake that? I guess they got in a fight and production ended. (I'd leave Cruise out of a Fahrenheit 451 remake personally)

Don't remake: A Clockwork Orange.

Agreed. Also add to the never remake list:
The Wizard of Oz
The Goonies
Back to the Future trilogy
Star Wars (any of them), even though the Episodes I, II and III should have been something else entirely.
Indiana Jones 1-3, I refuse to acknowledge #4
The Terminator
Terminator 2

Films or franchises that I think could benefit from a remake now:
E.T.

Gremlins

Flash Gordon (yes, really) And I've heard that it's in the works and I fear may be following in the same footsteps as the '06 TV series. Boo!

Superman - but only if someone does it right this time, dammit!

I could probably make HUGE list of films that should NOT have been remade. It would probably include 95% of all Hollywood remakes. One that always pops into my head is: The Day The Earth Stood Still

And then there's Spider-Man. I can understand the cancellation of the 4th film after the last one. But I think a reboot is just stupid. The first two films are still money makers and loved by audiences all over the world. To just start over now won't end well. I really don't think it will.

Shaun of the Dead and hot Fuzz should never have remakes, neither should Avatar, or The Hurt locker. Pirates of the Caribbean and Lord of the Rings are series that should also never bee touched. Especially Pirates because I don't think anyone could replace Johnny Depp

What films should be remade..that's a tough one because some are really bad and should just be left that way, and some could be remade and updated. Star Trek pulled it off very, very well, but The Day the Earth Stood Still was terrible, so, it all depends.

I would love to see a remake of Star Wars, one that's essentially darker and grittier. The Original Trilogy is still good and all, but I think if you put someone like Gore Verbinski or James Cameron or Peter Jackson or JJ Abrams in the directors chair, it could elevate that series past legendary.

I would love to see a remake of Battlefield Earth. With a a better creative team and a much better script, plus the right director, Battlefield Earth could be very epic.

Probably only weak movies (with strong concepts behind them) should be remade, leave the good ones alone, they already work. The exception might be adaptations of novels or plays where it can be interesting to see different takes on the same material.

Perhaps someone could figure out how to adapt and remake "The Martian Chronicles" properly.

Never, ever, EVER remake Casablanca!

I want to see the original John Huston Moby Dick remastered at 4K and I want the original whale scenes stripped out and replaced using CGI. Keep everything else intact, Gregory Peck's performance is amazing and who can beat Orson Welles as the preacher? Its a great movie.

DO: Poltergeist

NEVER: Anything Hitchcock

I would like to see someone attempt a "Touch of Evil" remake.

Love the Gremlins suggestion. That would be classic.

I've always dreamed of remaking "Flash Gordon" with today's modern CGI, but making the CGI look like it is hand made and old skool. (although I would make the bird men flying scene look more realistic). Ming and that Gold mask guy I would keep there costumes the same.
