  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

are you scared of scarlet?

haha awesome responses from everyone!

The worst that can happen is that the bar for indi projects is raised a bit, something that should probably happen anyways. If it scares you that you might have to work a bit harder then.......

If it scares you that an "amateur" might take your job as a 3D artist because this camera will somehow pave the way for them, then I hate to tell you but anyone with a high speed connection and a torrent program already has all the tools they need.

i was meaning that if one person can start doing everything, yeah some are going to be average, but others are going to be able to handle every aspect of a job just to them selves. $ that would have gone to many different people is taken by one person (for that project). i'm not real worried about that, more just interested to know if you think it mite happen?

this whole thing already came to 3D when computers that could run 3D apps became so cheep that there was one in every household. any kid can get a copy of maya now days and start making awesome stuff. i think the quality of 3D got better in general because companys had access to many more artists. and the value dropped alot, kids would work for nothing just to get a shot at some production experience (i did back in the day). but in the end the computer/maya are just the tool, (same as scarlet) like many people say here, if you are the best at what you do there's nothing to worry about, and that is totally true for 3d as well, or any job i'm guessing?

All the same principles apply - and you get radiosity for free ;-)

haha yeah i found this one out when i got a dslr! what usually takes hours to render comes out in less then a second! how good's reality!

Am I afraid of Scarlet? Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn. :tongue_smilie:

Yes, I'm not quite sure what there is to be scared of, however, if in fact one is scared of the Scarlet, I suggest perhaps trading in the fear for focus - focus on your project and use whatever tools you need to accomplish it.

For me, I am currently writing a feature film to which I plan to shoot with a Scarlet when it is available. I have a very clear image in my mind of exactly how I want it to look and feel like - the camera I currently work with simply can not achieve this look and feel. But chances are the Scarlet will - and even if it can't, it will certainly do a much better job than the camera I have now, so that is great.

However, I also have an old video camera for 1982 - one of those giant ones that take the VHS tapes, lol (when you look through the viewfinder of this thing you are literally looking back into the 80's) and I only hope that one day I will come up with the perfect film to use it for. After all, every tool has it's job!

I'm in exactly the same position. I'm using the waiting time to develop the script, and going through the typical re-writes.

I am, however, TERRIFIED of the Scarlet... That'll I'll drop it, spill coffee on it, leave it on the train, have it posted to my next-door-neighbour (who ALWAYS 'accidentally' opens my post) have it stolen by the Sony Handycam Gang.....

Anyone could take on a film themselves, why do you consider this to only be an option now that the Scarlet is about to come out?

Arron, as a 3D artist would you say you'd be able to produce a film as good as you see at Dreamworks/Pixar? Are you amazing at modelling/texturing/lighting/directing/acting/grading/animating? Do you have the time? How many great animated shorts have you seen done by one person. Personally I've seen around 5 in the last 10 years. And none are over 10 minutes long.

You're right though, if there's a lot of people out there, that have aquired these skills (and maintianed them) to as high a level as those that have dedicated their working life to them. And these same people have all the time in the world to go out and shoot these movies. And these same people have a really great in depth story, great characters and some great actors that can portray these characters. Then yeah there's a lot of people that will be worried.

the one person doing everything idea was just a theory, thinking out loud. i wasn't really thinking of film, more TVCs, 15-45 seconds is actually pretty doable for some high quality stuff all done by one dude. thats alot of cash that usually gets spread between many. don't know maybe it will never happen was just wondering if you thought it could?
