  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What level of image quality do you hope for?

Now the specs are out, and to revisit the question, Im wondering what level of image quality in respect to resolution and noise do we hope or expect from Scarlet.

Similar or better than a f900R? or XDCAM HD? f23?

Also how well it will work with 2/3 inch lenses designed for 3 chip cameras?

R3D RAW with 2/3" DOF characteristics for the 2/3" Scarlet of course.

Exactly what the specs say.

There's no reason it would like XDCAM HD, it's not compressed, not subsampled.

It will look better than the formats you listed.

It is in fact compressed, that's what Redcode is, a compressed Raw format. The compression scheme (as I understand it) is very good, but to say it's not compressed is just untrue.

I would think the image quality you've seen from the Red One should be a good starting point for what you should expect from Scarlet, but with greater DOF as should be expected from a 2/3" sensor. I'd imagine the native ISO of Scarlet should be better than Red One giving you better low light performance, ie less noise, and when shooting at Redcode100 overall image quality should see an improvement as well.

If the noise levels are anywhere close to the top end of the market this camera will cause some serious damage. I can see already loads of mid-low end productions ditching the higher end cameras, even if thrown at them at a deal, and getting 2 or 3 of these for what they'd usually get a single kit... You can already see that trend with the Canon 5D and 7D cameras. A lot of production companies now choose those cameras over more expensive ones, even over combination with 35mm adaptors as they get a massive value more money, still get 35mm looks, lighter for traveling....

Covert documentary is going to take on a new meaning!!

Scarlet is 4.4.4., 2/3", 12bit... Way better than XD Cam.

The image should be one of the best images you've ever seen. I'm sure the noise level will be non-existent, if you know how to light and shoot properly. What more would anyone want?

I expect great things, many of which are already being discussed. Take the image quality of the R1, make it less noisy(helping achieve:), a bigger DR, add in the new color science, fluts, the new post software, REDCODE 100... etc etc...

Then remember your DOF will be somewhat deeper, but then also remember that things like:

Battlestar Galactica
Benjamin Buttons
(Live action) Avatar
The Tudors
Attack at Zombie High!
Zodiac
House of Ass 9
Weeds
The Starter Wife
(parts of) Cloverfield
Collateral
Miami Vice
Public Enimies
Rachel Getting Married
Sin City
(Parts of) Domino

etc were all shot on 2/3" cameras.

**there are a couple of titles in there for your giggle sake only**

Oh and 2/3" lenses designed for beam splitter cameras will not work with the scarlet 2/3"

There were rumors of a lens mount for scarlet that would allow them, or has this rumor been dismissed as being... rumor?

I could understand it being difficult, as the lens would have to reorganize all the colors back into one focal plane. A diffucult optical feat in itself, not including getting the mount to line up exactly every time a lens is mounted. but still technically possible. right?

RED already make an adaptor for B4 lenses that screws into a PL mount, so you could buy the DSMC PL module and that adaptor.

I'm not sure if it's totally compatible with a 2/3" sensor though - I thought that that lens might do a bit of magnification to make sure the image circle covered the 2K area of the RED ONE's sensor - so it might make your field of view a little narrower than the lens would look on other 2/3" cameras.

I do expect that either RED will eventually make a DSMC B4 mount though - as far as I remember they've only said that there's not going to be one when the cameras are initially released. And if not, perhaps a 3rd party will make one.

The issue is that any lens designed for a 2/3" beam splitter with have issue on a single plane imager as the RGB will not line up right and cause chromatic aberrations.

So let me rephrase: in order for something like the digiprimes to work on the S2/3" it will require more than just a lens mount, it will need some extra glass inside.

I would hope that the scarlet 2/3inch will offer a picture somewhere between a F23 and the SI-2k. I think this is a 'near' reasonable expectation.

On side note I am a little confused why Red has not pushed to a S16 size sensor. Creating a 2/3 of an inch sensor that will never best be served by prism designed traditional video glass makes little sense to me. S16 lenses will work best so they might as well be allowed to work at their best?

I'd also love to see the same revolution/evolution as has happened to 35mm glass happen to S16 glass..

regards

Michael

PS I hear there are some good deals on Ultra 16s to be had at the moment!!
