Hey all,

Does anyone know anything about IBE Optics? I was browsing on the net late last night and came across their site, they seem to have some good stuff. There seem to be two different lens sets for 35mm that look interesting, these are: "Cine-Xenar PL Primes" and another set which doesn't seem to have a name, they have "Supreme" written across the lens and the name at the top of the page says "4K/5K PL Mount Primes for Red One, EPIC, ARRI D21... Sony F35"

Here is the link to the home page, if anyone knows anymore about these lenses I would love to hear about them!

The first set of lenses has evolved into the set that will soon be available from Schneider Optics. IB/E and Schneider (with Abel Cine Tech involvement) were working together on this project from early on, and as the lenses evolved the decision ws made to shift them from a "branded as IB/E" product to a "branded as Schneider" product. They have also evolved considerably since they were shown in prototype form at NAB (IB/E "Rebel" branding) and then at IBC (Schneider branding). They continue to improve dramatically and there are a number of interesting developments that I will share as soon as I can make them public.

The Supreme set of lenses are a top flight optical design from IB/E. These lenses are designed on the Ultra Prime / Cooke quality level. Zero compromise lenses. The first in the set is to be the 14mm with many more to come behind it. Excellent glass.

We hope to be showing these lenses and many more interesting items at NAB this year.

The web site mentions a price of 15,000 Euros for the set. i assume that Abel is seling them in the US, what is the price here?

Mitch, I thought this set was going to start with the 25/35/50/75/95... or am I thinking of another set? A 14mm is VERY attractive.

The Schneider Cine Xenar lenses come in 25/35/50/75/95mm at first. The IBE Supreme lenses are a separate product line, with little information known (outside of Mitch's inner circle). I saw a prototype of the 14mm at NAB, looked very nice. http://www.ibe-optics.com/PL_Mount_Lenses_4K5K

As stated, they are two separate lens sets. All will be revealed soon. Surprises coming.

Looking at that page...A 12-28 T2.0? Yes please! Even more yes if it could cover 5K at 2:1... really looking forward to NAB this year, especially as the next Reducation coincides with it. I think it's time I went to Vegas!

I just had the chance to shoot with the prototypes 25, 35 and 95mm (IBE/Schneider Xenar).
Awesome lenses! Close focus is a dream, no breathing and a beautiful bokeeh. And those were "only" preproduction lenses. Very interested to see the final lenses.

Marc, can you elaborate a bit more? Can you compare the sharpness and color rendering to any current sets? Do they focus smoothly? How's the field illumination? Will they make me pancakes?

"Beautiful bokeh" is certainly encouraging.

Ryan, field illumination is even, didn´t see any falloff. Sharpness is as sharp a modern lens can be. I don´t think there is a remarkable difference to Zeiss or Cooke. Can´t compare with RPP because I never used them until now. About the smoothness of focusing I can´t say a lot, because they were preproduction lenses. But they were already very smooth. Because of the telecentric design it is possible to focus very near. With the preprod until front glass ( FF from 2 cm to infinity looks like a travel in time). The color rendition is neutral and very clear. No visible distortion: If you worked with Schneider Kreuznach large format lenses you know what I´m talking about: Top end! IMO they are between Cooke and Zeiss: clarity from Zeiss and smothness and deepness of picture from Cooke. One thing I really like with handling them: they are rock solid, small enough to deal with them with only one hand and not to heavy. "Only" T 1.9, but 1.9 without loosing quality. In situations you see color fringing (very seldom) its a very small amount and only in one color, for ex. blue.
I can´t wait to see the final design.

Cheers,
Marc

Thanks for that, Marc. Very encouraging! "Only" T1.9 is just fine, especially if they perform well wide open. Looking forward to seeing them in person...

Will the 25-95 set eventually include an 18mm? That would be a deal maker. Also how does the weight compare to RPP's, especially at 25 and 35? I do alot of hand held these days and find the RPP's a bit heavy.

I have a meeting next week after which I can likely give more information. As I said, there are a number of surprises coming. Marc, I'm glad to hear you are so impressed with the glass.

It was a good idea for them to start on the wide end of the primes. I hope some of the surprises coming next week are good ones.

Just to be clear, I do not know what I will or will not be able to say after next week. I just know what I can't say now. ;-)

Tim, I didn´t measure the weight, but they don´t feel heavy. As I said, I liked the handling. They are not bulky.
Mitch, I think those workhorses have a bright future. I´m waiting to hear your news.

Hi Ryan,
here a snapshot from Redcine to show you the field illumination:
95mm wide open/late afternoon-cloudy/ 4,5K RC42/ 5000K/unsharpened/no corrections like WB, CC.
Cheers,
Marc

Hey Marc, thanks for posting that. Any chance you can provide a 2K or 4K TIFF through megaupload or somesuch? I'd love to examine it closer. Looks pretty good from here!
