We are announcing the release of the new RED 17-50mm T 2.9 Pro Zoom. Deliveries will begin in about one month. This lens is built to the same optical and mechanical standards as all other RED Pro lenses like the 18-85mm zoom and the RPPs. Price will be $6,000. Photos will be up soon.

This is the lens that was used for "Snappy" and the ISO 4000 footage.

Our standard RED 18-50mm T3 zoom will be discontinued and will go on sale starting tomorrow for $3995 until supply runs out. Progress.

Haha! I hoped the announcement wouldn't be far behind that little teaser...

The photo posted in the Lens Tests section makes it look about the same size as the current 18-50. Is that the case? How about the weight? And can we get 5K 2:1 out of it? I admit I don't know if the 18-85 will do 5K.

I'm amazed that you can offer it for less money than the current 18-50, on top of being slightly wider, and being of the same quality as the other Pro lenses. You folks never cease to amaze.

I love surprises like this!

Even wider! Very cool! Congrats.

The IQ seems wonderful, Jim! Snappy!

As Pawel points out it seems it will have be very close focus. Could you tell us what the closest focus will be at 50mm?

I'll have to look at the specs... but under 1'.

Wow, a killer lens to offer. I imagine it will cover 4.5k and most likely 5k as well. It will give all you really need for so many jobs in one small lens, with no compromises. I bet it will rent out like crazy!

It also be one bad mother of a steady lens along with a set of RPPs.

Wow! That's a surprise!

What's the coverage of the zoom? Does it cover to 5k?

Will this lens be on hand at the Red Day on Feb 13th?

It will be shipping by RED Day... we will confirm 5K coverage in a few days.

Nice one.

Will it hold focus through the zoom range? PRObably but I have to ask.

Will it have a data link?

Will this lens fit ARRI cameras as well? Remembering there was a problem with the prototypes of the Red Pro Primes. The 18-85mm Red Zoom still doesn't, which is a shame, because is a nice lens "even" for 35mm zelluloid cameras. We could fix that problem, but it was a very tricky mechanical operation.

This lens will fit Arri cameras. It has a shorter flange depth than the RPPs. No data link.

Minimum Focus is down to 4" in front of the hood, 11" from focal plane and Marked 1 foot on the lens.

Weight is 3.4 lbs.

Built like the primes.. great mechanics, incredible glass.

This is very cool news and a great step forward for Red optics.

Damn, now to earn more money to wire it to you guys :-)

I've been using this lens alot lately and it's my new favorite. It's really sweeeet.

Jesus! You`re still using nitrocellulose = celluloid based films??? Thought Kodak switched to polyester some time ago... :-D Just kidding!

It sure looks like they started with the same lens and had the mechanics made better, much as they did with the 300mm v. the Pro 300. Just a guess, but that likely would be why the profile is fairly similar and the size and weight are still in the same territory. Too bad the /i data goes away.

I would love to see RPPs on an Arriflex, although I'm sure the Arri folks wouldn't be so happy. Saw one on an Aaton, but it just didn't have the same effect.

Not hating on Arri of course, I love them dearly. But it would be kind of funny.

Not the same optics... much better.
