IMAX just announced an IMAX 3D digital motion picture camera.

I didn't hear any details. It was announced at the 20th Annual Global Entertainment, Media & Telecommunications Conference today.

Company Taps 25 Years of 3D Expertise and R&D to Develop the Next Generation of the IMAX(R) 3D Camera

LAS VEGAS, Jan 7, 2010 (GlobeNewswire via COMTEX) -- On the heels of this week's announcement between IMAX Corporation (Nasdaq:IMAX) (TSX:IMX), Discovery Communications and Sony Corporation to create a cable television network devoted entirely to 3D content, IMAX today announced that it is developing its first IMAX(R) 3D digital camera. The initiative marks the Company's continued move to explore new growth opportunities that capitalize on its leadership in 3D entertainment technology. IMAX expects its first prototype to be ready by early 2010, with the goal of an official launch in 2011. The new IMAX 3D camera is planned to be a component of a suite of IMAX-branded products and services available to studios, partners and filmmakers for use in production of premium 3D content.

The benefits of the IMAX 3D camera are expected to include:

* Proprietary, differentiated content for the IMAX(R) theatre network.
* Increased content for the Company's planned joint venture 3D TV Network.
* Lower production costs, due to the elimination of expensive film stock.

Yes! Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes!

And another Yes!

Although I was really only hoping for a 2D digital Imax....but this is good!

I wonder if the lack of specs in this announcement (no sensor size, no resolution targets?) is because IMAX does not want to tip their hat regarding what their future Digital IMAX Cameras and Digital IMAX projection specs will be? For example, are they working on a 4K projection system for their (true IMAX) large screens? 6K? 8K?

Things are getting interesting now.

With the Monstro Epics due within the next few years, I suspect there will be a few options for IMAX/large format 3D projects at very affordable prices.

To be honest, I think a pristine fully resolved 4k image in 3D would be quite breathtaking, and enough resolution; I'm with those who feel that less resolution is required for 3D. The sense of depth, and both eyes receiving different information seems like it doubles the perceived resolution.

But for regular 2D IMAX, I think fully resolved 6k-8k is probably closer to the resolution of an actual IMAX film presentation.
