Hi all,

Trying to track down some manner of Canon mount for the Red One in order to shoot some side by side tests between the Red and the 7D in early January. Would presumably be using one of the Zeiss ZE lenses for the test.

Any Red owners with a Canon dumb mount in the NYC area?

This is ultimately for a low-budget indie film to be shot sometime in late-winter/early-spring, and there is essentially no budget for the test, but could possibly find a small amount of compensation for anyone willing to help us out.

On a side note, has anyone shot some side by side resolution and/or dynamic range tests between the R1 and 7D (ideally using the same lens or lenses) that could share some of the findings?

DP for the feature is interested in using the R1 as the primary camera for the project, but may want to use the Canon for low-light night exterior work, and wants to test both systems to see how far he can push them.

Any insights are welcome, and if you have (or know of) a Canon mount for Red somewhere in the NYC area, please let me know!

Cheers (and Happy Holidays),
Clint Litton

Bump?

Not a single Red owner in NYC that knows of an available canon dumb mount for the Red One? Anyone?

Any information you can pass along would be greatly appreciated...

Hi Clint,

Unfortunately, I don't think there are many EOS dumb mounts out in the wild. I have a Birger EOS smart mount and a 7D, but as you probably know, the Birger can't switch cameras, and besides, it's pretty busy on my camera. But if you do manage to get a test off I'd be happy to screen it for you on DuArt's Sony 4K projector. I do think it's important to to see the images projected large to appreciate the differences between the cameras. PM me if you are interested. I also hope to have a 7D filmout test to show soon.

Or you could get a Nikon mount and use the Zeiss ZF lenses instead of the ZEs. We don't have a RED Nikon mount, but Abel does now offer the complete set of Zeiss ZF lenses and we include adapters to Canon EOS mount. Best of both worlds. $400/day for eight lenses.

Thanks Mitch, Andrew and Eric...

I was afraid there weren't too many out there, but still hopeful. Ideally I wouldn't have to buy a mount outright for this test, hence hoping to find an owner open to renting one to us.

It was a good suggestion about using the ZFs, Mitch, but alas, I sold my unused Nikon mount months ago, and with Epic around the corner, I don't know if I want to throw down for the Optitek. That said:

Are there any Red One owners in NYC with a Nikon mount that would be interested in coming out for the test, or at the very least, renting us your mount for a day of testing? If you were to have a set of ZFs + the Nikon mount, could be all the better...

Any further insight, leads, etc. are greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Clint

that's why I like canon ef so much - everything works on it.

Mitch, are your adapters good to infinity and snugly fit to the mount? We've had some real hit or miss manufacturers, so I'm always curious to see who has found one that works well, especially for rental.

We use (and sell) the Novoflex adapter, which I understand to be one of the best.
