  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Live view and Video Out Simultaneously on 7D?

Well, just as confirmation of what's been said, there is no way to make the Canon's LCD work while HDMI out is in use.

The solution is to use an HDMI splitter and send the HDMI output to two external monitors.

I used just this set up recently for a shoot, and it came out rather well. Of course I ran into some issues due to cheap/old monitors not intended for video/film work... but that's another issue entirely.

I recently put up a video on our blog, Cine Technica, about portable solutions for monitoring with HDSLR cameras such as the Canon 7D. Check it out:

Great post Mitch! Is the quality of HD-SDI any better than HDMI? For my purpose, I'm looking at either the Marshall or Ikan and just buying a mini HDMI to HDMI cord. Also, those two monitors fortunately have battery plates (like the one you used on the converter) on the back of them so they can accept Sony or Panasonic batteries.

The signal can't be improved by converting from one to the other. If you start in HDMI it won't get better in HD-SDI; can't get 10 gallons from a 5 gallon jug. But in general and certainly over any real distance, HD-SDI is a more robust cable and signal. I would want to mount this converter fairly close to the camera - either on it or on your body - and then convert to HD-SDI to travel any real distance.

I like the new Marshall 7" monitor a lot. I'm genuinely quite pleased with the image quality, functionality and build for this relatively low-cost monitor. I would choose it over the IKAN. At Abel we sell both, as well as other brands and models of monitors.

Very cool! Would I worry needlessly about the torque of mounting that much top-heavy rigging on the hot shoe? ..Note I haven't shot HDSLR yet, but have shot various Canon DSLR and video cameras with hot-shoes. One thing I do not like to do is load up the hot-shoe or put unbalanced things on the *top* of my cameras... wonder if anyone else here is of similar thinking?

Sarah,
I bought the Marshall hdmi monitor from Abel and I'm quite happy with it. I don't like to mount anything that heavy on top of the camera so here's how I use it. At the bottom of this page you'll see a couple of pictures of my mounting methods. The left side pic shows a Panasonic camera but I use the same mount with my Canon 5D. http://web.mac.com/bob8851/Camhandle/Gallery.html

The HDMI to SDI converter is a total featherweight. Even with the battery up there it is more an issue of getting in the way physically than being top heavy. Inside that box is a single circuit board. If you are using any form of onboard monitor then it can be stuck to the back.
