The 7D is an ASPC sized sensor (1.6x crop). The 5DMKII is FF35.

...it looks like with great noise reduction and some light in the shadows we might be seeing "decent" 2k out of Red at ISO4000!!??!!!??!!??!!

Where did you see any Mx 2k footage that you juge on? Please give us the link.

Post tools are there to help you when you need it. It should be noted that all DSLRs use NR and sharpening in camera. The higher the ISO, the more they apply. It makes sense. Why not? Except we do not use either in a RED ONE. So there may be a time when you need to pull them out of the bag.

This is on e of the real conceptual leaps of RED. All the processing that DSLRs and HD cams do is available in post, but available as needed, and after other processing is dine if that's a better idea for the scene. NR is an important tool, but it's way better to start with a cleaner image.

Since noise is the limiting factor to Dynamic Range in digital cinema, adding noise reduction in the post workflow is a legitimate way to increase the practical dynamic range of the camera. And as the post tools get better, so does the camera. It's really quite wonderful.
