So I recently purchased a Canon 7D and am very impressed with the overall image quality. I've been shooting with an "L" series 24-70mm f2.8 lens and a RedRock Shoulder mount (with CF rods) using a Zoom h4n for audio. However, I really need a good FF unit and monitor. What do you all recommend for a cheap but solid 5-7inch HD monitor for the 7D? I obviously don't want it to be too bulky as I will be mounting this on the Redrock rail system with a rod clamp. Also, for the money what about a FF unit? I'm looking to spend only about 1,200 total guys.

The iKan V55600 is a decent affordable choice. The Marshall V-LCD70P-HDMI-SB is a better monitor as it has peaking and false color but it is a bit more expensive.

If you want a larger screen, there's the SmallHD DP1.

I tried a marshall the $700 480p one and felt that focus could not be aquired

I bought a SmallHD and feel I can focus for the first time with any camera (5d,7d,Ex1) that I have owned

The screen shade is also awesome on the SmallHD

My only complaints with the SmallHD are..
Battery dies with no warning
Weight for handheld rig

Just concentrate on shelling on the lenses. Get Canon IS lenses and you won't have to use any shoulder mounts. Strip it down.

Agreed - spend your money on glass, and wait until you can afford it to buy good components. There's no sense buying things that are cheap (read: poor quality), as they will not last you long.

Small Hd. Its amazing with the Red too.
My only complain: their 5,6" is still in the works for a few months

Hopefully my iKan V55600 ordered at Zacuto (also had some problem {they just forgot me} with that delayed delivery)

will come tomorrow or the latest after New Year's Eve Holidays...!!!???

Then I can tell you more...

Best New Year's wishes.

The HD8900 has a wide variety of inputs including HDMI (DVI), VGA, HD Component, HDSDI (Optional), S-Video, and Video. The monitor will accept pretty much any resolution and frequency know to man. 4-Pin XLR connector is provided to power from power bricks. Accessories will include a snap on Sunhood, Tekkeon MP3450I battery for mobile use, and popular battery plate options.

You will not be disappointed. This monitor will peel your eyeball lids back behind your head.

- Brilliant end copy there!!!

That looks great, but we really need something the size and weight of the RED 5,6" LCD to work with the 5D/7D.
Got me thinking if my RED 5,6 LCD could somehow be bucthered to accept HDMI and external power?
