  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Cooke vs Master vs Red Pro Prime comparison at CML

Thanks for taking the time to point out that this has been posted before. should have done a search. i was over confident that I cruise this part of the forum frequently enough to spot it.

I thought the comparison showed to me at least that the differences aren't drastic between the lenses. but again, its my own personal opinion and anyone else will see things differently. I am also blown away by the fact that you can get a whole 6 lens set for the price of one 50mm master prime.

There is not going to be drastic difference unless you project the images on a cinema-size screen and, even then, most people will not see differences as much as the price difference may suggest. It is one of those things that, to get 10% better image, you need to pay 10 times more. :arf:

I fully agree. Red Prime users should be very happy. I had a pleasure to shoot with Red Primes (thanks to Paul Moss) and found them surprisingly good.

But then, there are (admittedly rare) situations, when that extra 10% makes a difference between a good shot and one that blows the socks off.

Very well stated.. by the way.. just curious which focal lengths MPs you own?

Here's the comparison:

1. Master Primes are loved by the DP and hated by the Producer.

2. Cooke S4's are admired by the DP and grudgingly tolerated by the Producer.

3. Red Pro Primes elicit shock and amazement from the DP and are absolutely loved by the Producer.

Have you guys applied any sharpening to compare?

Not sure why they had to underexpose to compare lenses. Am I missing something technical?

Pawel, in terms of resolution I'd say it feels like more than 10% :) especially if compared to the Cooke.

It is a shame there isn't an exhaustive comparison between the MPs and RPPs yet. I am sure that the deeper you look the more your jaw drops for the $:IQ, mechanics included.

I can't wait to get my dirty paws on one of those mouth watering 18mm RPPs!!!!!

Would have preferred to see some charts to be honest. The only thing that is really telling from the test is how the lens handles flare from the candle and the overall contrast of the lens.
