In light of tomorrow's health care bill vote which I appose. I began to wonder what a health care bill would look like if it had the best interest of Americans in mind. So I drafted a bill. I kept it concise, and would like your input and feedback.

The Peoples Healthcare Bill

To provide higher quality health care for all Americans, reduce the cost by 25% immediately, and integrate preventative and alternative medicine
1. Reduce the amount we pay as individuals and as a nation for health care by 25 percent per year- effective immediately. Eliminating co-pays while maintaining the same level of care you currently receive without having to wait for approval from an insurance company for procedures your doctor feels are necessary.

Eliminating current health insurance. The health insurance industry currently keeps 30% of the funds you put in towards your health care. With 300 million Americans and roughly 50 million or so un-insured, 30% savings would be able to insure an extra 100 million people. Only 50 million more need insuring. The surplus of 50 million out of 300 million would translate to a 16% cost reduction. In addition introducing 50 million or 1/6 more clients would introduce another 9% savings via bulk orders. The larger the number of supplies you order, the cheaper the price comes out to be per unit. That translates to a 25% savings per individual on your health care.

2. Increase the quality and care patients receive. Through the existing and future grants and fellowships the people fund through the government towards university’s and hospitals. The breakthrough’s will not be kept proprietary only benefiting those institutions or regions, but will return to the people advancing science and cures at an accelerated pace.

Supply grants to study alternative medicines such as acupuncture and allow your physician to prescribe any recognized form of treatment he feels is best for your condition and finest recovery.

3. Introduce tax credit towards preventative medicine. In recognizing that working out and eating well and taking natural supplements play an integral part in a persons health, reducing the risk of many illnesses- Introduce a tax incentive. Up to 400 dollars a year towards a gym membership, 1000 dollars towards personal training, and 500 dollars a year towards natural supplements, ei vitamins and minerals. Promote preventative medicine recognizing it reduces the overall cost of health care in the future.

My guess is the architects of the bill started with something like that and quickly discovered the execution wasn't quite so simple.

I see a lot of criticism of government, and that's a good thing; one of the sacred principles of democracy.

But I would remind everyone that the decision to mount a fundamental change is a mammoth task, riddled with complexity and compromise.

The fact that former presidents just preserved the flawed status quo just meant they weren't up to the task.

If you haven't seen the beautifully produced drama of John Adams, I highly recommend watching it. Change is not easy, and comes at a cost.

But hey, I'm in Australia. We've always had socialized health care and I wouldn't trade it for anything!:hurray:

Here is my feedback. Get some universal healthcare. A story from Canada

About 13 years ago I had a friend who just had a baby. His little girl was born with a hole between the left and right side of her heart. He had just started freelancing and had just bought a new home. He was working in a regular job, making a decent wage in a working class family.

His child needed open heart surgery in the coming months. There were weekly visits to the Children's hospital, drugs and the surgery could happen on a moments notice.

There was no line up.

Their child had the surgery and in the ensuing months and years given a perfect bill of health with all of the appropriate care and follow up from some of the worlds top doctors at Toronto's Hospital for sick children.

The parents stayed at her side until she was well enough to go home ten days after surgery.

The only thing they had to pay for was parking the car at the hospital for ten days while their child recovered. They went home to the house they had not lost and their daughter is 13 years old today.

I'll be honest. I did not read through your proposition, but can you really put a cost on the story I just told you?

David

BTW: I think you meant "oppose".

The funds would go directly to the hospitals to administer their facilities. A socialized medicine health care model. Which, health insurance is anyways. the premiums are higher across the population to cover the cost of those that have a heavier burdened care such as cancer or heart care.

I think the solution would be to eliminate all for profit health insurance in the country and expand medicare to cover everyone.

Things like paid vacation and leave time that you see on other countries would be good as well. Not having to worry about getting back to work ASAP so you can support your family and instead take that time to recover until you're 100% again is a necessity I think.

All of the insurance carriers in my state are non-profit. Profit isn't the source of the costs.

I'm sure there are many who would like a single payer system. But it wouldn't pass. We couldn't even get enough votes for a microscopic public insurance option. A single payer system gets branded communism and that's the last you ever hear of it. And PLEASE don't call it "The People's Healthcare bill". The word People's is now synonymous with Chinese death camps apparently.

My concerns with profit based health insurance have little to do with costs.

And getting single payer passed in this country isn't beyond possibility it just requires a level of promotion that it might never have.
Us single payer supporters talk a big game but we can't sell it, hell apparently we don't even have the political muscle to get a decent seat at the table.
That whole thing with the cold war and fighting the red menace certainly doesn't help our cause either.

You guys want the government involved in your health care? If they run that the same way they have been running our debit or the country as a whole then we would be in a whole lot of trouble. I'm part of a union and I have health care through them. So if we could have something like that for everyone that would make much more sense to me. I don't want to be paying for someone else's health care when they just sit on their ass and do nothing. How is that fair to the people that work their asses off.

People right now already take advantage of the free health care we have in this country. Like we the people having to pay for a drug dealing, low life, piece of trash couples to get In Vetro because they want to have a baby. Mind you these are people that don't work and don't pay taxes. So why should I pay for something like this. I know this is going on because my Mom works at a hospital and has to deal with the scum of the earth that come in and get free health care right now. Just because people don't have health care doesn't mean they won't be cared for.

I just think this is a very very bad idea what they are trying to pass. When the people running the country don't want to have the same health care as what they are trying to pass that should raise a couple red flags.

You are paying for the "scum of the earth" to get free health care. Your premiums are on average a thousand dollars a year higher to cover the cost of increased hospital and emergency room rates required to provide indigent care. Indigent care is acute care needed to treat life threatening disease or injury to the point that the patient is stable, not necessarily to full recovery.
Under our current system many people who are insured are denied payment for necessary health care due to insurance industry rationing for profits. Nearly 40% of personal bankruptcies in this country are due to medical costs for serious disease or injury for people that are insured.
The lowest cost, most efficient and most effective healthcare delivery system we have is Medicare. The only reason it loses money is that it only covers the oldest and sickest portion of the population. People who could not buy private health insurance at any price because private insurance companies don't want to cover sick people.
As a freelancer in the individual retail market, now 60, my health insurance consumes more than 20% of my income. It only covers 80% of hospitalization costs,no stop loss, no services of any kind outside of a hospital, and provides about a 25% discount on drug costs. I am fortunate not to have any major health problems or even this level of insurance would not be affordable. It does not cover any of my routine health care costs at all. Insurance at this cost in any other 1st world nation would provide full coverage of all costs with no deductibles or out of pocket costs other than minimal copays in some cases for routine care.
We have had 60 years of private health insurance provided on conditions and under regulations controlled by the health insurance industry. They have failed miserably to either provide universal health care or to control costs.
Time to try something else.
Every other 1st world industrial nation provides universal coverage of all citizens through either public or private non-profit health insurance systems or some combination of the two. You are covered whether you work or not, even in most countries whether you are a citizen or not. Where private insurance is used as in Germany and France, insurance companies are regulated like public utilities, overhead and profits are limited and most of the funds go to pay for medical care. On average the cost of private insurance is nearly 1/2 of what we pay and the insurance provides far superior coverage. So far we can't even get to something as cost effective as this approach.

He actually voted "Nay". He laughed at himself, along with the rest of the senate, then changed his vote. He must be nearing a mental breakdown from working so hard to get it passed.

Don't understand the problem with governement health care. We have it since 1914 over here and happy with it.

Now you have to struggle against the axe of evil that tries to ruin social emprovement to capitalize more $$$.:reddevil:

No exactly, you have to have private insurance & pay a premium by law in Switzerland, no choice.

Accident insurance is a separate legal requirement therefore doubling administration costs.
