I know this is probably a hard question to answer since it is not out yet.

But for someone who wants 720p/1080p out of the box, is there any estimate of how much footage can be recorded onto a 16GB CF card? Let's say we are talking Redcode 42 or whatever.

Are we talking about 20 minutes or an hour or what???

I think it was something like 12 minutes of Redcode 42 on an 8GB card, but don't quote me on that.

Depends what 'out of the box' your talking about, if you mean scarlet/epic then this will be different from R1, at least that's what I remember, as the REDCODE won't be the same meaning as it has been currently. So what use to be a concept of we get X amount with 42 won't be the same logic with 'therefore we get X amount with REDCODE 200'.

16GB according to iSee4K at 2K with redcode 36 it can do around 34mins. So most probably 45mins?

don't forget that recording straight to 720/1080 means you're not shooting RAW, which means the datarate goes up. Redcode leverages the natural 'compression' of a bayer image to squeeze a lot of data into a small box. Debayering the image into RGB space messes that up.

In the last Scarlet User podcast Ted said that the downscaled could be RAW as well. But they are working in that, nothing is determined yet.

Not sure the results of downscaling before debayering would be all that awesome. All due respect to Graeme and the Red Team but the more data you can feed the algorithm the better - for color fidelity as much as resolution. Moreover, from what I understand, even more critical for signal to noise ratio.

Is the issue is cost per minute of recording? Long rolls between mag changes? Unless you are climbing Everest and every ounce counts, even remote docco folks should be able to copy the data off the CF cards to a Nexto (small, battery powered storage device) regularly and reuse the cards. Are you trying to budget for using the CF cards for long term archive? Assuming the Epic and Scarlet offer a scaled 1080P out the SDI spigot you might consider the Nanoflash if your goal is just to have ready to cut media in a more mainstream format...

FWIW the people who typically have the best experiences with the Red ecosystem are the ones who embrace it. Oversampling is your friend. Solid state media with significantly greater capacities at ever lower prices looks to be on a steep curve these days. CF cards can be rented, bought used and resold, etc. Just sayin'

As far as I know, the R1 CAN'T shoot 720/1080p. . . it CAN do 2k, though.

@2k/REDCODE 42/24fps, you can record 17min and 15sec on an 8gb Card, and 34min 30sec. on a 16gb card.

(Source: MPC Data Rate Calculator, ITUNES LINK)

how are you getting that? I used the data calculator and it gave no option for which type of redcode to use, only 2k, 3k, or 4k and then frame rate.

i got your same results by typing in 2k, 24 fps, 16GB but i just think you need to take redcode type into account.

Why the heck would you do that? with all due respect. ALWAYS capture at the highest quality (3K,4K, 5K) and TRANSCODE to your deliverable format. Like Prores Quad for deliverables. You will get stunning results.

REDCODE 28 and 36 42 will all work on 16GB Card. Roughly the same as a film reel 11 to 12 mins.

You do understand this is a RAW image camera? Not a video camera that has onboard processing that "bakes-in" a look, right?

HUGE difference. 4 Things need to understand about RAW

1. Exposure
2. Debayer
3. Processing
4. Color Grading.

EDIT: Its also well known that you CAN NOT record REDCODE42 to the 8GB card. Its too slow

ghood luck and happy shooting
