Hi,

I'm wondering what my best options are going to be for grading my next project. I'm currently using an old 24" LCD monitor with a TN panel (!) and know that this is one of the worst things I could be using to grade.

My budget is small (or near none existant), so I was wondering, if you had a micro/no budget situation to work with, what is the best that you could use (or, make do with!)?. I know people are going to tell me thats like asking a man to fish with a butter knife, but put bluntly, there's nothing I can do about this situation. I have a couple of 19" CRT monitors knocking about that are in fairly good condition, and I could purchase an IPS panel monitor maybe if I sold this TN panel LCD monitor.

Your advice would be appreciated.

Jamie.

In an effort to bump this, would an 8 bit E-IPS panel be good enough for some small time grading work?

I'm thinking of getting the Dell UltraSharp 2209WA. Any help would be really appreciated.

Not knowing exactly what "little" means, and what your expectations are for final delivery, perhaps an HP Dreamcolor would fit the bill?

Jamie, check out the SP2309W. Here's a link. Currently at $219. 2048 x 1152 resolution. Like you I'm on a budget so this is what I bought. Personally am very pleased with it, especially for the price. The link is http://accessories.dell.com/sna/products/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=320-7641

I guess it comes down to what are you grading for - how you are calibrating the monitor, and what color space you are in, and which one you need to deliver. When one reads features such as:

"TrueLifeTM - Enhances perceived contrast, color and brilliance: pictures just look so appealing"

you know the monitor is doing something to the display that is not part of the image you deliver - That is not what you want. So hopefully can turn this feature off because you want beautiful images based on how you are grading, not because of the display adding a "look" to it.

But again, depending on what you are grading for in your final delivery - it may not matter. That is up to you to judge.

Hi Elsie,

Thankyou for the link. I checked out the Dell, and unfortunately it's a TN panel. TN panels are usually fine - I've been using one for three years (: It's just they do have their shortcomings after a while, so I'm wanting an IPS based panel for my next monitor.

I don't believe it is. It would be clearly marked under than brand. The one I am referring to is: http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/e...70-3884471-3648397.html?jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

You can find it at some resellers for ~$1600.

Michael

Thanks for the link Michael. I'm based in England, and I can't find the Dreamcolor for less than £1000 which is way out of my price range! I would absolutely love to purchase that.

I've decided on either the HP LP2475w which I've read has an impressive panel, or the newer Dell U2410 as it's got slightly better colour performance apparently, but slightly poorer black level performance.

Hi Jamie,

Coming from a photography background and limited budgets, one gadget that I've found that now will always live on my desk is a Spyder 3 monitor color calibration unit.

At least with a budget monitor, I know the colors I'm looking at are somewhat true. In Canada, the best deals on computer electronics is TigerDirect.

Good luck with finding a monitor for your budget.

Thanks Derek. I already own a Pantone Huey Pro for calibration. I'm located in England, although I like the prices I see at Tiger Direct I'll have to stick to paying over the odds in England!
