I've been conflicted over this for a while, but I'm definitely going to sell now.

RED EVF - excellent condition, always treated with care. Includes 2ft. EVF cable and 5" RED Arm.

ET EVF Mount - Perfect condition.

Both together for $3550 OBO

Why am I selling? ...Cold. Can't use it in the cold. I shoot mostly outdoors and even with an insulated warmer, heat packs, etc.. I can't use it in extreme cold. Call it frustration if you will, but I just spent a whole week shooting with two RED Ones and the two EVFs were barely usable even after piling all sorts of crap on top of them and the cameras. How cold? -7°F to -22°F (-21°C to -30°C). The cameras handled like champs as long as we kept the batteries warm, RED-RAM and CF media worked great. It wasn't hard to keep the LCDs warm, but the EVFs...

Anyway, sorry for the rant. It's for sale if anyone wants it. Hopefully the Bomb EVF will handle cold better. My warmer I made for the EVF handles just fine all the way down to about 0°F (-18°C), but past that I just can't seem to keep it warm enough for extended time periods or on remote hike-in locations.

Jeff,

Would you mind describing how you made the EVF warmer?,, and maybe a couple quick pointers on the other accessories? I've been looking at portabrace polar bear camera case but really don't know any 'tricks' of the trade if you will.

Thanks in advance and not trying to thread-jack,

I'd like to know at what point you run into trouble with the EVF. I mean, are you good down to 20 degrees F? Or is even that a problem?

Thanks, Jeff. . .

Anything below freezing is a problem for the EVF and the RED Drive. As for the EVF, when it's cold, it exhibits a solarization effect or just complete loss of the image once cold enough. It's good all the way down to 32F/0C and you can go colder than that if you start out with it warm and are not in the cold for prolonged time periods.

My "EVF Warmer" is an old coat sleeve I cut to slip over it like a sock with enough of an opening to mount the EVF and another small hole for the cable to come out. I cut a small finger hole to operate buttons too. I would stuff some heat packs inside this thing. I also tried adding an electric warmer into the mix on this shoot, but the one I found at Walgreen's couldn't generate much more heat than a fresh heat pack.

I know I could make something that would provide adequate warmth for the next time around, but doing so is just making this more hassle than it's worth. I'll move onto the Bomb EVF since it's supposed to have an internal heater.

Batteries were kept warm in by placing them in a cooler with heat packs and a couple space blankets. We had two campfires burning at the shooting location and a couple propane heaters. Much of our gear and camera prep was kept in the warm areas, but the actual shooting was out in the cold. Cameras generated enough heat to warm themselves when operating and it also helped that shooting was during daylight hours. We had 3-mil and 5-mil plastic bags over the cameras to help trap camera and solar heat and also to protect from blowing dirt/snow. No condensation issues as the humidity was close to 0.

I wanted to test the RPPs in the extreme cold, but did not have the chance to do so. I pretty well had the Duclos Tokina 11-16 on my camera the whole time. The other RED was equipped with an Optimo 12X. Both lenses handled beautifully. We collimated both REDs in the cold with the NULL lens. Both did need adjustment for the shoot and after returning to normal temps.

I also had a Canon 7D on the shoot and it handled the cold just fine. Kept the batteries in my inside coat pocket and the camera inside my coat except when shooting with it.

bump.

Still open to offers. New cost for what is offered is $4140. I will sell the ET EVF mount separately, but only if the EVF sells first.
