  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

It's been awhile since i checked up on this issue; has the color science within color been fixed yet, as in what you see in rocketcine or redalert is what you'll see in color or is there still some shifting going on?

if so has anyone figured out a workaround or offset formula?
Thanks,
~T

We're not going to see the new color science in Color until we get a new plugin from RED.

Given the math involved, I doubt there's much of a workaround, besides the tried-and-true "Render in RA/RC/Clipfinder" method. It's not just a function of offsetting by X degrees Kelvin.

do we have any idea of when a new plugin might be issued; can't really do final color grading in Ra/Rc/Clipfinder

This has been a major issue for us too. We grade a lot of RED music videos in Apple Color. When we first heard about the new color science back in late August and did our tests with it we knew it would be a major stumbling block as is. But for a long while after, most of the footage we got was build 18 and it wasn't a problem, and so we waited for a new FCS plug-in. Here we are in December and everything we get is new color science footage. Many of the clients that we have convinced over time that the RED is not so difficult to post are beginning to question color fidelity in Color. They are emotionally down on Color. We've in many cases had to transcode to 10bit formats for tape to tape, and the promise of 12bit grading in Color is broken. It would have been better to have an updated plug-in by now. At the very least it has added additional transcode times that are hard to bill for.

I'm kinda in the same boat for a couple of RED projects. One of the major benefits (At least as I see it) of the FCP/RED workflow is that I don't need multiple terabytes of drive space for each project. I'm currently working a feature off a single 1TB external drive. Not ideal, I know, but it's what we've got to work with right now.

I was really excited about the new color science as well, as the project's all kinds of dark. It's build 17, but a test on the new RA made an amazing difference in the noise levels. One-lighting everything into ProRes4 would eat more disk space than we can spare, though, not to mention the render times.

It would definitely be nice to at least get an update on the status of the new Color plugin. Maybe not a "It will be out in X days", but even a "Yes, we're still working on it" would be nice. I'm starting to get the feeling we've been forgotten down here in the trenches. Monkey Extract/Crimson/Whatever workflows are all well and good, but some of us are holding out hope that the RAW workflow in Color will get brought up to date. Preferably before the next major FCP update, since waiting that long would be totally unacceptable.

Are we waiting on Red or Apple to fix this?

I'm pretty sure we're waiting on RED for a new plugin. That's another reason a status update would be nice. If it's an Apple thing, someone could just come out and say "We're waiting on Apple", and we could all go spend some money to upgrade to other workflows, because if we're waiting on Apple, we're not going to see anything until, at the very least, a major FCS patch. Most likely we'd be waiting for Color 2.0

I think that this is Apple's baby. I don't think RED can write the code to have QuickTime decode the new color science.

This said, what CC software does decode the new color science?

I'm pretty sure the ADOBE Suite decodes it all.

I'd be working on this though because Apple has sold about a million legal copies of FCP, so that's one million people who can complain about RED's workflow.

Assimilate Scratch.

Scratch or Speedgrade, for example.

Apple needs to adapt Color to the new SDK (Adobe needs to do it for CS4 too).

A company like Apple, with an installed based of 1M copies of FCS -- most of which are never used for editing Red footage -- is probably never going to be able to keep up with Red's pace of development. ProRes 4444 workflow for Color looks more tempting all the time.

I believe Baselight does this as well, we switched halfway thru a project and had to readjust some stuff, definitie improvement, and a lesson learned again (and again and again and....)

OK,

Those that support the new color science...

SCRATCH
BASELIGHT
VEGAS 9

Still in line...

APPLE COLOR
FINAL CUT PRO
ADOBE SUITE
DISCREET products???

Who do we ask? RED? APPLE? ADOBE??

There is a build of BaseLight which uses the new colour science, but I believe the current release version has reverted to the old SDK, as some people were unhappy about having to adjust grades half way through a project. But happily BaseLight lets multiple versions of the software co-exist on a system, and you can run an older version if you need to.
